Description 2005 mixed media on cartulina

When I first came to México City, I was astounded by the amount of monuments. Although most of them were monuments to events, presidents and war heroes, the one monument that seemed bizarre was the monument to the boxer. That gave me an idea...

Many young people abuse solvents. I imagined a future in which there would be no glueheads, and we would need a monument to their disappearance. The father is showing his daughter the monument and explaining who the solvent sniffers were.

I did volunteer service for 5 years with an organization that works with street people, trying to get them off drugs and the street. Once someone gets addicted to solvents, their liver has 10 more years and that's it.

How strange!
I never would have imagined there were glueheads in Norway.
Do you think your granddaughters have knowledge of this at their school, or do they go to good schools?
I tried it and I didn't like it.

Thanks for the compliment. There's a story behind the painting. I knew what I wasnted to draw, but I had company that was demanding all my attention. So I sent them to the store, and in the 5 minutes they were gone, I did my drawing. When they came back, I was able to paint even while they were there. I finished the painting that night and my friends were amazed because they saw the whole process, except for the drawing part.

I think sniffing glue is a problem everywhere....along with all kinds of drugs....Safia most certainly know about it.
(Sahra is only 8)

Aaaaa, that is a lovely story! Thank you for sharing!

An anecdote...
One night, a friend and I were walking home from a night of drinking. We stopped at a street taco stand to eat some tacos. A homeless kid approached us and asked us to buy him a taco, which we did. He was so grateful that he gave each of us a piece of his solvent-soaked rag and we had to sniff to honor that kid who gave us a part of his most valuable possession.

So sad Jimmy. I see them every day. Working with street people really raised my consciousness about the danger of abusing this cheap drug. I hope for the day when sniffing glue is a thing of the past.

I'm glad it's not so bad in this small town now Wayne but it was awful back when i was younger. It must be pretty heart breaking for you to see some of these poor youngsters addicted to this highly dangerous Solvent. i hope one day it's a thing of the past too over there
