Hi, can I use your photo as a reference for my future painting/drawing? Just to practice and include in my portfolio. Not to sell or anything commercialΒ Β Thanks in advance.

Not at the zoo I normally go to, it's really nice but small. The one I went to this time you can barely see all of it in one day even walking almost non-stop.

The usual, African mammals, larger North American mammals, lots of birds, a few Asian species and reptiles. The smaller zoo has an aquarium and more Asian species, less birds but the exhibits are newer and you can spend time to get good pictures of specific animals since it's smaller.
The big zoo is much farther away than the smaller one, I've only been there twice in my life. It's not practical to go to three times in a year. I normally only go to the smaller one once a year since it's a ways away too. 2 hour drive minimum and you have to leave early or get caught in rush hour traffic.

Ahh...African mammals really seem to be a default in pretty much any zoos. Never seen a zoo without at least an elephant, a lion, or something from the 'safari'.Β
The one near me has plenty of animals, many very rarely found in collections- among them, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, Slender Loris, Dusky Leaf Monkey, Largha Seal (though I suspect they may be more common in Europe), Brown Booby, Chinese Merganser, Oriental Stork, Swinhoe's Giant Softshell Turtle, Aldabra Tortoise, etc. but all are kept in such atrocious exhibits that I would prefer not to visit it either way. And there's some kind of 'pet zoo' at the back that keeps Huskies, Chihuhuas, and German Shepherds in tiny concrete cells not even big enough for a Cockatoo to stretch its wings. It's just really quite atrocious...goodness knows how the poor animals feel.Β
We have another one here, actually, a sort of Safari that's kinda nicer. But both are quite far from me, and unless I'm going to the zoo to locate and tick off a passing wild duck passing a morning on the waterfowl lake, there's really not much reason for me to go there.Β
Traffic isn't too bad here, but 2 hours isn't exactly unexpected either. Traffic jams occur regularly and erratically, so there's usually no warning until you've already rendered your hindquarters sore sitting in the middle of a bridge.Β

Yeah there's usually some African animals though the smaller one I got to features the aquarium and Asian animals instead like Clouded leopards, Malayan and Sumatran tigers, Asian elephant etc.
I wish there were better standards for zoos in many countries. The ones I've been to are nice, only one was iffy in Arizona but otherwise I haven't heard good things about many zoos abroad.
I usually only make one annual trip to the zoo, cost is a bigger reason than time/distance. So going twice in a year is new. Going over to the Seattle/Tacoma as much as I have lately is really unusual really.
High traffic times are pretty regular and the bottleneck areas too here, pretty much it's first thing in the morning and 4 to 7 at night, people going and leaving work plus lunch hour. Accidents are the only thing you both can and cannot plan for.

Ah..
There always seems to be an African or Asian theme to a zoo- usually large animals from either. While it certainly is interesting, they do get a bit old after a while (at least for me)..I would actually like zoos to have more 'native-based' exhibits or themes as well, showcasing native animals that occur in the area, but that might not be seen that often by people. This would show people the wildlife outside their own front door and how they act (and how they can be protected, if need be), instead of showing them (in my opinion) rather used and tired Zebras or Impalas...
And while Lions certainly are majestic, they're in virtually every zoo, and they too, get a bit..old..
The zoo I visited yesterday actually had Tigers and Asian Elephant as well! Though the Tigers were Siberian, not Sumatran or Malayan. Also the white ones, which (correct me when I'm wrong) almost never occur in the wild.
Yeah, same. People fussing about exhibit sizes in otherwise great zoos in Europe or the US should really open their eyes and look at some of the atrocities here in China. Siberian Chipmunk actually showcased in a bird cage, anyone?
Ah..yeah, I only visit one zoo out of the two we get here once a year. Mostly just family trips, and to see the animals...I'm not exactly gonna go to the zoo to check for one exhibit update or whatnot- both are too far away for that, and I don't want to tell my parents I want them to drive half the expanse of Shanghai to see the new Desert Locust exhibit.
Rush hour's mostly just around 5 in the evening. At other times, its less predictable and you just have to hope for the best...
