I really enjoy this series of illustrations, but this is my favorite. The bright colors and composition is so beautiful. At first, I thought it was an Indian version of Sleeping Beauty. Well done!

For some reason, I'm reminded of a series of tales from India, that the book refered to as "Parrot Tales"

mmm never heard of such tales.... i'll google it now.. thanks for the info..
but yes this is an indian story, well a buddhist one. it's like a biblical story for buddhist..so this may be quite popular among indian people or buddhist people.

"Parrot Tales" is Hindu, I think.
You remember the story about the Buddha's previous life?

Sidharta...
Legend said that in his previous life, he was a king reknown for his mercy and kindness. He intrigued the Gods, who decided to test him.
One day, the king saw a hawk pursuing a dove, and the dove flew into his throneroom. The king offered the dove sanctuary. The hawk, in turn, told the king that, if he were to deny it the dove, it would starve to death, as it had no strength to pursue another meal. The king, then, offered to sate the hawk by giving it an amount of his own flesh equal to the dove. So, the king placed the dove on a scale, and took a scythe began cutting away at his own flesh, but, no matter how much flesh he took off, he could not equal the dove's weight. Then, when he was practically a living skeleton, rather than bear the thought of either creature dying, he offered his life to the hawk, in exchange for the dove. With that, the Gods were so awed by the king's magnanimity that They restored his flesh, and the hawk and dove revealed themselves to be Vishnu the Preserver. Vishnu then blessed him and told him of the great things that he would accomplish in his next (and final) life.
