Description This is my first attempt at a 'fully functioning' mechanical USB device.

Its currently got a 250GB (but it can have up to 2TB) 2.5" external drive enclosed in a Comb jointed Macassar walnut chassis. Its made up of well over 140 individual parts and it has around 12 moving cogs/gears. When the drive is plugged into the USB, the cogs start to slowly rotate & continue too until either the device is ejected or you turn off the motion with the concealed switch.

As it was the first, it took around 80-100 hours to complete & I still class it very much as a prototype as opposed to a 'final' product.

I've already started work on the MK2 which is going to be something really special!

I'm hoping to include: A 'Ticking' motion rather than permanent rotating action. The gears on the MK2 will only operate then the drive is 'active' & there will be many other moving part's as well as the cogs/gears etc

Here is a video of the hard drive working [link]

Hi There, I signed up to Brass Goggles at the begging of the year just after I completed my 'iPoise' prototype. but since then due to my workload I've not been able to be as active as I would like. Its something I'm definitely going to try & become more involved in, in the coming months.

omg, I totally love this one, wondered how you might do something larger than a small usb Awesome for sure

HAVE YOU SOLD THIS AND IF NOT HOW MUCH IS EEEET?? >:[

Also, I wonder if you've ever considered including the hands of a clock in there? Especially since you are getting them to move now? I'm guessing the concealed switch is where that handle/spring lookin' thing is, maybe?

Oh I soooo want something like that! I'd park a 500gb drive in there, be about all I would honestly need for a portable drive.

That is freaken cool. You should upload a video of it.

Would love one for my immersion PC. The silver box the HDD is enclosed in doesn't fit the steampunk theme very well lol

Hi there, I'm seriously considering making a full Steampunk PC setup over the coming year - keep your eyes on this space because as soon as I create it, it will go on here!

sweets8 In reply to back2root [2011-06-03 00:12:34 +0000 UTC]

I hope you use bigger gears! Otherwise you'll use up all your stock of little ones and it'll take a million years to finish (though, that would be sweet, it would boggle the eyes and you may well go mad after creating it and then where would we turn to get such awesome things made?! )
