The spell effects are really neat, I spend hours after seeing something like this wondering how I'd duplicate the effect using my own tricks.

Thanks! My method is really simple. I use layers in photoshop and color burn, color dodge, and overlay different colors, adjusting the opacity of the layers.

I never figured out the photo-manipulator I had access to when I had a good one, so I limited myself to trying to duplicate similar effects inside the render-engine (Ds in my case). It makes for a lot of interesting tricks.

Love the effects! Especially with the background lighting.

Well, my first thought was "Great" also, but then again, you want us to be critical. So I'll be critical.
Leena is the one who happens to be less pretty. At first I thought smoke was coming out of her chest but that's just her hair. You might want to raise some strand a bit higher.
I also looked at her shadow, which seems to be missing. The two guys slaying that beast have a clear shadow in front of them, to the right. I would expect so see some near Leena too. The lack of shadow makes me doubt about where's she's standing.
I also wonder about the coloration of the characters since most background characters are slightly reddish. Leena is pink to light tan. Sure, you could say the blood of that beast is emitting right led but then that shadow makes no sense. It seems as if Leena has been added afterwards.
And I could not help wondering from where Leena started to run to Vania. Her left leg seems to indicate she started somewhere to the left of that other woman, running downwards and turning to the right, as if she just let the guys handle that beast. Otherwise, she might have shosen to run over the grassy path since that's more reliable to run upon.
But the shadow of those guys also makes me wonder about the location of the sun. A shadow that clear must mean the sun isn't clouded. But the red sky shows plenty of clouds.
Yes, Vania loomks great but I think the background could be improved. Then again, I'm extremely critical with my comments.
