Description UPDATE 11.13.11:
I uploaded a better photo to replace the previous horrendous shot.
I apologize to anyone that like the original photo,
but this one makes me cry a little less...haha
...so it's here to stay.

-------------------------------------------
Super Sculpey
Approx. 6.5 inches tall (from lowest toe to top of head)

I haven't sculpted since May of 2010...
...so I wanted to do something simple and fun as a warm up.

...took much longer than a warm up though. By the end I was melting...ha
Anyway this is a sequel to my ' iinfected' fetus sculpture. I'll be sculpting something more substantial soon..
oh and also the red thing in it's ribcage is a rose with a skull in the middle. It doesn't appear well from this angle, but it really doesn't matter...

by the way, it feels freaking awesome to sculpt again!
Happy Halloween!

I haven't painted my sculptures in a while...and if I do it's usually just
simple wash with a bit of watered down black...
What I do these days is I mix in food colouring into the clay.
It gives an interesting muted effect that I believe appears more
natural under light because you retain the transluceny of the material.
...oh and a tip, if you need black I like to add black ink...
You could of course take an easier root than using coloured dyes
and buy coloured clay instead...but in my case I seem to like making my life harder...haha

hehe ok thats an interesting method... i like the idea of colouring the clay by myself better than bying it dyed...so you can make your own colours and be more flexible.

Ballistyc In reply to sKodOne [2011-11-15 20:31:48 +0000 UTC]

...actually buying pre-coloured clays is just as flexible as dying the clays yourself as you could blend them together to create different shades or colours as well. The only thing I don't like about buying coloured clay is that it can be expensive, and the clay isn't as suited for detail work.

THank you!
I usually say 'no, I don't sell these', but that's only because I don't think people would be able to afford them, and I usually doubt I'm being made a serious offer.

I also use super sculpey, but I'm not that good... I was just wondering, what do you use to paint your sculptures?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ballistyc In reply to Crispysquirrel13 [2011-11-05 02:47:15 +0000 UTC]

I actually didn't/haven't painted this piece yet.
The colour you see is from mixing food colouring into the sculpey.
It's something I've been trying to do as of late...
...easy thing to do would be just to buy those pre-coloured sculpey blocks, I guess...haha
I always make things difficult for myself.

What caused the interruption? Also, have you done any work with epoxy clay?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ballistyc In reply to Torquinox [2011-11-05 02:40:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh it was due to a little ailment I had right after I did my Minotauro sculpture.
...actually it wasn't so much an ailment as it was an allergic reaction to a combination of summer heat and shell fish.
At the time I wasn't sure what the cause was so as a precaution I stopped using polymer clays.
I was afraid it might've been due to years of polymer clay exposure...
...anyway after I figured out what the cause was I had gotten used to not sculpting.
That and a lack of motivation really deterred me....plus it didn't help that I also got a PS3 last February either.
I hadn't played games since '03, so I was making up lost time...haha
...I've got about 40 games now too...haha

I've used epoxy clay, but not it's full extent.
I only use the 5 minute stuff to secure my armature wire.
Why do you ask?

Torquinox In reply to Ballistyc [2011-11-05 12:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like you had fun! Well, it was a lot more fun after you got the PS3... Sorry to hear you were ailing. That's not fun!

I've been thinking about maybe doing some sculpture. Some of what I want to do involves modifying plastic kits. I'm already doing that, but with carpenter's woodfiller. Interesting material, but dusty and somewhat limited. I also want to try some original work. I am thinking I can build up an understructure using heavy wire, polyfoam, and aluminum foil.

I think with sculpey, the size limits and heat are deal-breakers for me. So I was researching alternatives and came upon Aves clays and Magic Sculpt. It seems either of those would do what I want; but I'd like to hear from someone who knows about these things. I may simply have to order some and try it.

Ballistyc In reply to Torquinox [2011-11-11 00:56:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah the Ps3 is fun...although I don't feel the same urge to play games as often as I did when I was young.
However these new world wide online rankings are interesting and something I don't remember in my last outing.
It's enough to keep me interested...I managed to rank 11th place on a particular 'Predator' level on the new Batman Arkham City yesterday.

Using epoxy putty to modify plastic kits sounds doable.
Although from my experience with the 5 minute plumbers epoxy it can cure so hard that you would literally need industrial tools (like a rotary tool) if you wanted to do any additional adjustments like carving or sanding, which would also create a dusty environment as well. But I guess that stuff I've used was meant for leaky pipes and not sculptures. I remember seeing a few sculptors here on dA that were quite proficient with epoxy putty that might be able to help you out. They sculpted miniatures similar to those War Hammer figurines. I can't remember their names though....and they one I do remember is no longer here.

I would stay away from epoxy if you're building something large...and when I say large I mean something over 5-10 inches or so. The heavy wire, foam, and aluminum foil you mentioned are great for large scale. I would recommend looking into buying sheets of insulation foam board at the hardware store. Then you could just glue slabs of them together with epoxy glue and create pieces of any size, and carve into it using 'hot wire cutters'. This is the extact process that Hollywood effects studios use to make giant set pieces. Also another Hollywood technique you may also want to consider is 'vacuum forming', which is also the least messy option I would say.

Anyway I think it's awesome that you've gotten interested in sculpture.
I might not be the best person to ask for sculpting advise here on deviantart,
but if you need any advise I'm always willing to try and help.

Torquinox In reply to Ballistyc [2011-11-11 13:21:56 +0000 UTC]

Predator level? Were there movie-style Predators running around or something else? Good job on the 11th place!

I can already tell the plumbers epoxy is too fast-drying and not nearly workable enough for my work. The Aves and Magic Sculpt is supposed to have a window around two hours. You can adjust that a little by adjusting the amount of hardener in the mix. More = faster, less = slower. Apparently, you can use a little water to smooth a surface; and that also slightly increases open time. These products are big in the doll-maker community. They're well-regarded. The tutorials I've seen all show that you work the material just like clay. Some mixes are harder than others. My thought was to use the epoxy in a fairly thin top layer for applying surface detail. I think I'll probably have to buy some and try it. And I'm sure there are people here that know how to use it. I'll have to poke around.

I don't know about the vacuum forming, but I have a sheet of that foam. The hot wire cutter is a brilliant idea! I found videos on youtube. I expect the results will be much better than with my utility knife.

Thanks, Chuck. I appreciate your help!

More colourful than usual! Great!
It's quite macabre, I don't usually say so... Might have to do with the fact that I don't really like infants..hmm.

However! Splendid sculpting! I love the way you always manage to get the skull-shape so very well! I can't believe you haven't sculpted for so long. Haha it's an awesome "starting-again-piece".

Yeah, it's actually not that colourful. It's due to my shitty photography skills, and me trying to make it up with my shitty photoshop skills...haha
I'm glad you like the shape of the skull....even though I've sculpted them so many those skulls never seem to get easier.

It's funny cause my 'iinfected' piece was a continuation of themes from my 'Ying Yang' piece.
I didn't anticipate those themes going further than those two pieces, but I loved my iinfected piece
so much that I had all these other ideas floating around....so a series could actually happen.

People assign meaning to everything around them, whether it is intended or not. I simply thought that you could get a great deal of money by selling your pieces to such a place. Money is great stuff, it funds future projects and allows us to maintain our health, hearth, and home in the mean time.
