Description
Long ago, the elder gods were brought into existence by the ancient scholars.
Originally, these beings were intended to be not gods, but servants – to assist ordinary people in some particularly tiresome or dangerous tasks, while receiving sustenance in return. This particular one, judging by the pickaxe-like appendage, had something to do with mining and creation of quarries. But as time went on, most elder gods had developed enough intelligence to recognize how dependent on them their surrounding communities had become. And many decided to exploit this dependency, demanding additional offerings and providing less service, excusing this with some rather convoluted and vague explanations.
This approach had slowly shifted relations between people and elder gods from cooperation to worship, and also led to formation of multiple cult-like factions, each worshiping a specific god and often antagonistic to each other.
The Founders were unhappy with this state of affairs – and so the Godhunters Order was established, and even the entire species was created specifically to dismantle such cults.
Multiple gods were killed, but ones that were not too dangerous were simply banished to the edge of the world instead. There, far from civilization, their minds had regressed during eons, gradually turning most of them into the vacuous beasts – the feral gods. And since all of them possess at least some innate shape-shifting abilities, the regression of their minds had led to deterioration of their bodies as well, resulting in some truly bizarre forms.
Now, they mostly wander from planet to planet without purpose, occasionally attacking one another. They feed on energy – and the only thing that can satisfy their hunger to the full extent in the power supply of a bit city. Back in the time of yore, they received it from the cities that worshiped them – but now, the only way for them to get it is by force. So if you would see one of them approaching the edge of your town – be afraid!
