So far we have yet to observe any kind of alien life. It could be that convergence dictates alien life forms to be similar to those we know, because at the end of the day, it is the forces of nature that determine our looks. Then again, life on Earth is diverse: We could predict that life must be shaped like fish in exoplanetary oceans to overcome the constraints of moving through a fluid, but would we have been able to predict the shape of an octopus in oceans closer to home?
