It's so seldom that I see the females in the open that I'm delighted to get this shot, even with it's limitations...

Thank you! That;s what I thought but now I'm not sure. The immature males look exactly like the females at first but are much bolder. A week later the brave "female" seemed to be starting red patches.... [link]

Thank you! My experiment with "catch in focus" finally worked so I'm going to set the camera up (not too close) and go sit in the car with a book. With any luck, they will be curious enough to land in front of the lens for a good look. I've got my fingers crossed!

I definately needed a lovely day, out taking pictures. Seeing a new bird was special and I got pictures of a deer too! I don't think I will put them up as he was too far but still, he didn't notice me at first so maybe one day I will be able to get a better one....

I had to do quite a bit to get it even this sharp... I was using manual focus and didn't quite get it right.

that happens to me constantly .... I have just learned how to correct it after the fact ... I'm not so sure I am any good at taking pictures ... just better at fixing my mistakes
