The ruined gate has stood for over a thousand years. Air brush original, text added digitally (font: GutenbergsGhostyes, released in Dec 1996 by "Manfred Klein").

This (like somany) is a work in progress - I'mnot at all happy with the poem, but I had a 9.5hr flight from Dallas to Zurich on my way from San Jose to Ansterdam today, and also I wanted to post something since I'll be away for a few days without net access.

Narrow the path and steep
Well-guarded the gate
A thousand years they stayed
Barring the way to lands unseen

Death-rattles remembered of men who fought
Blood and bones on battlefields strewn
Ancient screams echo in tortured dreams
None who lives can tell their crime

Yet only ghosts that tower guard
Where once were hordes repelled
Who dares approach the ancient Gate
Colder than ice, constant in hate?

Behold beyond yon wall a valley fair
Full ripe and yet unknown to mortal men
A lonesome wail, a shiver shared
By all who come and leave again.
