Description
Continuing what's becoming a series of drawings with anthro MLP characters test firing various late 19th and early 20th century pistols.
Primarily I am exploring the early 1st generation of semi-automatic pistols that were around in the late 19th and very early 20th century. Many of these were not great designs, but they would lead the way to better future models.
While new technologies were offering alternatives to traditional forms of handguns, there were someponies who still felt the older ways were better. Even at this point there were individuals proposing older established systems as being better solutions.
Applejack dropped the final of four .476 cartridges into the massive four barrel pistol and then snapped the action closed. Then she glanced over at the curmudgeonly old pegasus stallion and sighed before addressing them.
"Ya know the Crown is hankering ta git their hands on one of them new self-loading pistols, and this here thing is–"
"The competition says they were looking for a new repeating pistol!" The stallion replied tersely.
"Well yes, but I reckon the Royal Sister figgered that everypony knew what they meant when they said they were in the market fer–"
"The instruction just said repeating pistol!" The stallion interrupted AJ again. "How many cartridges did you load into it dear?"
"Um, I put four rounds of danger beans in it, but I wut I'm gitting at is–"
"And will happen if you pull the trigger four times?" The stallion cut her off again.
The mare glared at him. "Well. Unless there's a dud or there's sumthin amiss with this here shooting iron I figger it'll fire 4 times, but–"
"Then it's a repeating pistol!" The stallion said triumphantly. "Therefore it technically meets the requirements for being a repeating pistol! The crown tested Plowshare's silly old revolver!
So they can do me the courtesy of testing my much superior and much more reliable concept! No silly slides, bolts, spinning cylinders! My design has none of those finicky little mechanisms! It's simple and foolproof! Even some bumpkin from a farm can run it!"
"Ya know who I am dontcha?" Applejack growled "Ya know I live on a farm?"
"Then my amazing pistol should be easy enough for you to use!" Proclaimed the pegasus. "Now please proceed with the test."
AJ gave the stallion a serious case of stink eye, but then proceeded to stuff some cottion wads in her ears while muttering. "Let's git this over with!"
The pistol in AJ's hand is not an escapee from some steampunk universe. It's a Lancaster pistol, and they were offered for sale from late 1860s until early years of the 20th century. C&Rsenal did an excellent in depth video about them Link, as did Ian over at Forgotten Weapons Link.
