The other day I had the distinct privilege of shooting a few sets with Krista and her identical twin Danielle.This is Krista.

It's unbelievable that both the clothes and the hat are black (or very dark), yet they perfectly extrude from the black background with the superb lighting, and don't mix with it...

It's actually pretty simple and shooting black on black is one of my favorite things.
The model is standing about 10 foot in front of the background. and has a med sized softbox placed at a 45 degree to her right The light from this softbox illuminates her black clothing and for the purposes of the shot this light causes it to become varying shaded of dark gray.
For this shot I used a rim light that was placed behind and to the left of the model shooting hard light. This illuminates that side even more and all the the blacked just along that edge of her black sweater are lighten to much lighter grays. This creates good clean separation between the model and the background. It also shoots hard light across her belly and brings out the detail in her well defined hips.
Since there was no light on the background whats so ever had I not used the rim light to create to create the separation her left side would have faded in to blackness as can be seen in ad I not used the rim light she would have faded into blackness as can be seen in the image at this [link]
I actually have a few of those from this set. Perhaps I'll upload one later to show the difference.
