I hate maya, and I hate you for making such cool stuff in it.

I hate Maya too. Max is so much more intuitive, has better lights, and better pre-loaded materials. Maya is so customization happy that you can't get it running if you're just aiming to get something simple done!

I am just happy that we are only learning how texture and light this year, although I have to work on a uv texturing project currently

thanks! that took foreeeverrrr. I can't get global illumination to work so I had to keep adding regular lights to try and mimic the look of bounce light!

Awesome! You 've got some nice background skills. You should make me background so I'll never have to draw them again. LOL

If you want to try roughing out backgrounds in 3d you can try google sketch-up. It doesn't have the options that Max or Maya have, but it's pretty simple to use. a lot of concept artists will model their roughs and then paint over the top of a print screen in photoshop. for a lot of my scenes i just build really simple primatives... but i went overboard on this scene because I sort of want to use this in my portfolio. Man, I tried to make a spaceship interior for my 3D animation final, and fell flat on my face. I donno how you people can even think in 3D-on-2D-screen terms. It breaks my brain. :\
But this looks awesome~

I'm kind of the same way with perspective in 2d on paper. I'm actually drawing these for the original comic i'm working on. I grew up with about four doll houses and i'd make doll houses out of ANYTHING I could get my hands on(even square birdhouses and caboodle make-up cases), so maybe that was a bizarre kind of practice?

It probably helped for sure. :T
Lol even when I made 3D stuff, it HAS to start out 2D otherwise I have troubles.

thank you! It took me FOREVER to figure out lights in maya. It's very straight forward in Max, but maya hides so much stuff. x_x;;

djkcbaslkdnvlekjmvwek you know mayaaaaaa. I must ask, do you know of any really good online tutorials for idiots such as myself? We started 3D animation class today and it was my first time with Maya, and i am HOPELESS with it. D: Seriously, could not even get stuff to paint on an object, or extrude a face, nothing. Teacher was no help whatsoever T.T

the tutorials that are in the program itself are really helpful, at least for modeling purposes. I've never done animation, so i can't help you there. ;3;
[link] these are the tutorials from autodesk themselves. hopefully that helps!
