Baby Virginia opossum. Oil on board, 11x17.

I gessoed the board and sanded it smooth, then used thin layers to build up the color, more like watercolor than oils. I learned a ton with this piece, namely, the merit of rich blacks. While the paint was still wet, I put straight cad red into the eyes and that put in a tons of depth. Also, I learned about linseed oil. The stuff is like magic, I tell you, and lends a very nice sheen and depth to the paint as well.
