EDIT: i won third place!

this is my entry for the contest at the #Dwight-Schultz-Group . the task was to draw mr schultz in our favorite of his roles. my favorite of course, is reg barclay from star trek. i drew him from star trek voyager, because that is how i remember being introduced to the character and the actor. i had seen him in star trek first contact years before, but i hadn't paid terribly close attention to him at the time. i paid enough attention to remember who he was though, when i saw him in voyager.

this is a scene from the episode 'pathfinder.' it's my co-favorite voyager episode (other favorite is 'renaissance man'). this is from the scene at the end after he makes contact with voyager--their first contact with home in six years--in a way no one thought possible. no one would listen to him, but he was sure it would work, and it did. but he wasn't all...proud or anything that he'd done it. he was disappointed when the call ended, because he truly cared about the lost ship... it would never occur to reg to be prideful about an accomplishment. so, here he is, the humble hero.

the coolest part is, this was my favorite episode before i started adoring mr schultz as an actor. i loved the character first, which...well, it means something to me. this is off-topic, but, i think it means more to appreciate a character before you appreciate an actor... because, if you're focusing on the actor, are you really focusing on the story? so yeah...

anyway... i'm exhausted. i've not drawn in so long, and i've not shaded anything in years. and i have absolutely no instinct for shading, i'm completely lost whenever i have to shade anything. and i also had to draw extremely lightly so i could fix mistakes, and i never draw lightly. so it was quite a stressful process and probably took longer than it would have if i'd just...not worried and drawn the thing. oh, and the reason the shading was so much trouble? look at my reference pic: [link] my brain is just...incapable of filtering out those random shadows, so...yeah. this took me...um...well, i worked on it in inconsistent intervals for three days. it's certainly not perfect. the shading is the main problem i think, and it doesn't look entirely like him, but...i've never drawn him before XD so it looks enough like him that i'm pleased for my first try...

so yeah. contest entry. my favorite of mr schultz's characters, reg barclay. i have no expectations to win whatsoever xD but drawing reg is now something i can check off of my to-do list for my life XD
