Man, I used to be a pretty hardcore anti-Zutara person until I rewatched AtLA this year. While I disliked Zutara (almost entirely because of being caught in the shipping wars) I also never really cared for Kataang. I liked the potential in season one and for how different the ship was from the norm- a younger guy whose carefree spirit lightens the life of an older girl who has been forced to take on too many burdens for her age. But after season one, any chance for a good take on Kataang was gone and it looked like by the end of season two that Kataang was set to end with Katara rejecting Aang and Aang learning to let go of his crush. Season three outright made me despise the ship for how it warped Aang's character so he could remain morally pure and get the girl and for cheating Katara out of any development in her feelings for Aang.
I stumbled onto a blogger, Araeph, and their critiques of AtLa, particularly their support of Zutara and criticism of Aang/Kataang opened my eyes to the flaws in the third season, particularly for Aang. I highly recommend everyone go check them out because they perfectly put every issue I had with the series but couldn't personally describe.

Cause honestly, in what universe would Katara EVER EVER EVER EVER choose 12 year old kid Aang over 16 year old HOT MUSCULAR BROODING Zuko?
It makes zero sense. Negative sense, I tell you. LoK doesn't even really exist for me, cause there's no conceivable way that Zutara doesn't happen.
That's how it goes in my mind, anyway. Aang can totally get over it and go be with Toph. I support that ship. <3

My first reaction to this was obviously Zuko.
My second was that Katara had said Sokka, and Aang was truly confused, but he wouldn't be worried because he's a monk.

He technically stopped being a monk when he ran away, in a way. While he still do a lot of things the way the monks taught him to do them, there's just way too many things he does that contradict their believes. You know, like being with Katara and marrying her and all that.

and I'm still wondering till today why such perfect matches like Zutara and Taang didn't happen! =/

Because they're not perfect. Not story or character-wise, at all. But they look cool together, I can't deny that at all. But seriously, in terms of the characters themselves, Zutara just wouldn't make sense. Neither would it plot development-wise. If Zutara were to work, they'd need to create at least two seasons of Zuko and Katara bonding and developing their relationship, just like Aang and Katara did... at least from a technical storytelling perspective, and from a writer's perspective.

Poor Aang, even though I adore Kataang I'm always fascinated by the way Aang would deal with it if Zutara did happen. The only thing I hate though is when people call Aang immature. you do not loose your entire people, entire culture, manage to remain sane, and then be called immature. In fact, in many aspects I would consider Katara immature. But that aside, I love this art. Maybe we can see how Mai deals with it when she and Zuko are reunited?

Honestly, many of the characters in the show are immature at times. I can't fault Aang, or anyone for that matter, for being immature because he's just a kid. In fact, most of the characters are. I just wish that he was portrayed differently given his circumstances. He went through a lot, but I failed to see him grow from his experiences (depending). He is shown to be strong and able to move on, but he also has so many weaknesses that he's never shown to improve on. Sokka, Zuko, and Katara (I guess Toph too?) are such dynamic characters. They changed so much throughout the series and I felt that their change was appropriate according to the events of the show. So rather than thinking that Aang is immature, I'd rather refer to him has too static for being the main protagonist of a series.
It's a touchy subject for many, so thanks for being respectful about it. Seriously though, this is a kid's show. I can complain all I want about character and writing flaws, but I suppose one can't expect too much more depth from the story than what's already there.
Anyways, I'll definitely look into making a Mai-reaction piece. Great idea!

Seriously, it sounds like you haven't payed attention. If you see it as nothing more than a infatuation, it seems like you've neglected all the bonding and inspiration they had between each other and such... And what is it with the 12/14 year old thing? Has society really poisoned people's minds so much? If I put up a picture of a pretty girl and told people she was 18, they'd say she was really hot and that they'd want to do her and stuff (at least the men, and the homosexuals.) But if I then turned around said "Joke's on you, she's actually 14!" they'd all be like "Oh, no you're so gross, you f**** pedophile!" Is that really what the world has come to? Is a 2 year difference so bad, and can't the boy be the younger one? Is it because they're not in their twenties yet? I just can't seem to grasp the idea that people would argue against a relationship between those two ages if there's real love between both of them, and if they're smart enough to not have sex at that moment. In my opinion, shipping the relationship is not feels wrong, it's knowing that there's people that think it's wrong which feels wrong to me...

Infatuation seems like the right word to describe his feelings for her. According to Bryke, though, it was true love which...amazes me...because I can't really believe that a 12-year-old can love anyone that much. I honestly don't even think he took the time or made the effort to fully understand her, yet somehow he loved her? People change, they move on, and I think in the long run Katara and Zuko would have worked out much better. I felt that they understood each other so much better by the end. Still, I agree that even Zutara would work better when they're older. Meh.
Maturity is a huge factor in a working relationship, and that includes age and experience. No one can convince me that Katara and Aang fell in love at 14 and 12 years of age respectively, got married eventually, and had kids nearly 20 years after the end of the show and have that make sense to me.

Yes! Yes it does make sense. Because he was way too immature to be with the super-mature Katara.
