Description See! Even the dude wearing the green tights gets it! By the way, I have no idea what he is doing here. He just felt the need to randomly show up.Β Β

I believe I am not the only person who has expressed an issue with this little movie mistake. You do not go into battle against the forces of evil without your armor. It is a guaranteed failure.

I OWN NOTHING.

Unfortunately the Mithril shirt was too small for him. That's the reason why he gave it to Bilbo instead of wearing it himself.Β

That's Robin form Robin Hood:Men in Tights, right? ... then no wonder he's there, he loves the quirky one liners at just the right momnet

and yes that's a stupid thing to do. Not sure if that happened in the book ... but either way ....

damn it, going into war with anyone without armor on is stupid! while the men may be untrained, those evles weren't, but the orcs and wargs posed a bigger threat than the elves. And considering how LAST timeΒ  turned out when Thorin had an encounter with Orcs & wargs, you'd think he'd know better.

Yep, that's Robin. I swear I have no idea what's he's doing here. He just popped up out of nowhere.Β

No, it didn't happen in the book. Thorin and the dwarves definitely wore armor when they went into battle.Β

I was looking at a movie still and saw that Kili had chainmail jacket (jerkin?) on, and looking at Fili.... well there was chainmail on the shoulders... and that's it. Seriously, he was wearing a leather jacket(jerkin?) that had chainmail only on the shoulders.

Really movie people?

Omg, yes! I wonder what it was like in their funny little brains, thinking it'd be better to take off the armor right before going into battle.

I would understand wearing lighter armour in order to aid maneuverability and lessen fatigue, however it would then be silly to have that full plate-armour in the first place! And why is there no mithril for the heirs of Durin? *sighs*

BeautyAndStrength In reply to Always-The-Dreamer [2015-03-21 00:18:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, earlier they were all wearing armor and it didn't look like they were having any trouble moving around in it. Dwarves are skilled craftsmen and know how to make armor that is light but effective. They made mithril, didn't they? So I don't know why they wouldn't wear any armor when they were actually fighting.

They weren't fighting earlier. There is a significant difference between marching and combat.

I'm not sure what you mean. When Thorin declared war on Bard and Thranduil, him and the company all wore armor when they were waiting at the wall, obviously prepared to go into battle. But then they took it off? What was the point? It made no sense!

In the book, Tolkien says that they charged onto the battlefield fully clothed in shining armor, gleaming like fire in the sun. I personally would have loved to have seen that in the film.Β

Always-The-Dreamer In reply to BeautyAndStrength [2015-03-22 07:01:04 +0000 UTC]

I agree that it is strange. I'm trying to say that if they were simply wearing lighter armour, I would understand why. However, the changing of the armour is unusual and if it were by the book, they should have worn their full plate armour. It would have looked rather spectacular, too!

BeautyAndStrength In reply to Always-The-Dreamer [2015-03-22 15:22:13 +0000 UTC]

I see what you mean. Perhaps there's something in the behind the scenes or maybe an interview where Peter Jackson explains his reasoning behind that choice. Because I'm having a difficult time understanding it.Β
