Description

alternatively titled: “Perfectionism Is A Myth: You’re Just Mean To Yourself”  a novel by me

Something from my dusty stash of unposted art from last year! Just a stream of consciousnesses comic based on me reading some old comics.... I also really want to make a vampire magical girl now...?

I shamelessly adore others growth, both seasoned inspirations and blossoming juniors- but I barely afford 10% of that kindness for myself. It really has worn my character down over the years, so realizing it again while innocently reading old manga was really startling. Didn't post this for a whiiile because... er, well... I didn't think it was good enough to share. It's real bad case, doctor!

Sorry for the "real talk whiplash" sort of humor,  but thanks for looking.

Honest, the part about suddenly realizing that childhood favorites weren't quite the masterpieces I remember them as hit me straight on. I've sometimes rediscovered some artist who's work I would stare at for hours as a young teen, and then suddenly realized that I can now see many flaws in those same pieces. It kinda jarred me at first, made me wonder if I was becoming cynical and overly critical, but then I realized that it was a sign of my own growth.

yknow this comic was exactly what i needed to see today, especially since I've been in a major slump over not being good enough and comparing myself to others. Thank's for posting bee, you're great!

Of course, but ambitiousness can become pretty harmful if a person doesn't stop to be proud of the progress they've made so far!

Not particularly, it was an amalgam of a few different comics into a made up example!

same here with me, i'm like that with my own art and still proud that i still have them with me, to reflect how far i've come.

It really do be like that sometimes, haha
Some work we were exposed to as kids probably lingered somewhere special in our hearts due to the nostalgia factor, or we were just THAT mindblowned the first time we experienced it, but then we grow up and things just don't feel.. as amazing as they were when we were children. Which is kinda sad to be honest

It took me a minute to realize the comic pages themselves weren't identical, and that really does carry the message so well.  Sometimes it really helps to remember it was a different time, both for the reader and the artist.

If it's worth anything, I've been cleaning out my room looking through stuff I drew when I was a teen and I've been telling myself I want to re-draw them... but I've also been putting it off like mad, so I can relate. Thanks so much for sharing this!

As we get older, we just put so much pressure on ourselves that we forget to have fun sometimes. It's always about perfection never about just putting something out there for the sake of doing it.

I went through this hard rewatching the Tokyo Mew Mew show in my mid-twenties XD Now I see all the cheap frame reuses and animation stills with only the mouth moving, trying to get more mileage out of one drawing instead of doing more for movement, the corny writing.. it's kinda painful lol But the nostalgia still holds value ^^ I feel you there though, idk how to be nice to my own art, I guess cause I knew how I made it and all the flaws. I always want to commission art from others that I'm perfectly capable of doing because then I won't know the flaws :/

IT'S SUCH A GOOD MESSAGE THO?? And one I think a lot of artists can do to be reminded of/told. /Myself included aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAA-

Also totally enjoyed flipping back and forth between the nostalgic panel and the 'real' panel to see how you drew all the differences

Yeah, we're all mean to ourselves. From time to time I look through old drawings and look for positive things in it - be it a cool character concept, the creativity, a nice outfit, and focus on that even if the art itself cannot compare to my current level. Then again, the "current" is an amalgamation of all experience from all previous art pieces
