Description #87 - Life. Even more of a stretch than "Insides" prompt wise. My problem is that I draw a picture and then try to fit it to a prompt, which kind of defeats the purpose I suppose... oh well I settled on "Life" because he's walking around in the living world, in the middle of a city full of life. I then made up even more deep sappy reasons why the prompt would work, but I won't burden you with them.

I made this because I was playing around with some tutorials by (AMAZING artist btw) on how to make a real photo into a manga like background, and it sounded like fun. I put this in digital art because most of it was done on PS (like the toning). But this was inked by hand. And yes, I know it's kind of balanced oddly, but I like it for some reason.

Drawn in pencil, inked with Sakura micron pens, toning in Adobe PS 7

A bit of manga used as ref. The background photo I found somewhere on Google image search.

Edit: Sorry all, had to fix something that was driving me crazy.

Edit the 2nd: Oh man I am so honored, did a tribute to this picture with Rukia. It's awesome, go check it out! [link]

I like the flavor of this picture!

The realistic background is unique to me. It let's Hitsugaya seem more realistic.

You know, I like the way Hitsugaya looks here better than I do in the manga/anime. And I love his outfit!

hey i love this pic so much im going to make a remake of it with rukia in it...you dont mind do you?
I've had rukia pics in lying in my comp and i had no idea what i should do with them and then I saw "Life," and also the fact that you were just so nice i had to tribute a picture to you!

i think its great that you tell people how you do your artwork...this is a community to learn and i hate it when people are snotty lol

begger4mcgregor In reply to xHINATA [2006-12-20 01:34:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I agree, I hate it when people get snobby and possessive about a technique or something. It's stupid. I'm still learning from others to help me experiment with my own art, and I'm happy to help others I think I explain it poorly half the time though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xHINATA In reply to begger4mcgregor [2006-12-20 06:57:45 +0000 UTC]

Nah, i think you explain it very clearly! All i think what makes you think that you dont is that the terms you use might not be familiar to people who are just starting out...it happens all the time...i understand your explainations just fine! But when i first started using photoshop i really had to read the photoshop how to books like over and over again because of the terms i didnt understand...but i find that the most helpful thing to do is to actually tell them like for instance not to just say the pen tool but to say in parenthasis (press the "P" key on your keyboard) It helps out alot since i wont have to spend 10 minutes looking for it and then getting confused about it all LOL
basically those shortcut photoshop books i found at the library were semi-god haha

begger4mcgregor In reply to xHINATA [2006-12-20 08:16:40 +0000 UTC]

You can press the "P" to get pen tool?!?! See I can explain how I do my pictures, but I don't know all these nifty shortcuts like the hotkeys and whatnot. I need to get a hold of one of those books....

xHINATA In reply to begger4mcgregor [2006-12-20 15:43:37 +0000 UTC]

haha yeah they save you lots of time rather than to look to the screen to press an icon
ill give you the most useful ones i use.....
"H" is for the Hand tool so that you can move your pics around flawlessly...or you can just hold "spacebar" down
"B" is brush/pencil
"E" is eraser
"V" is the move tool (the dark arrow to move the actual pics in the canvas not the hand to move the canvas around the screen)
"M" is the marquee tool (crop tool selection)
"L" is the lasso....so helpful when you are using the wand...("W")
and i think "X" is to change the colors between the foreground color and the background color

those are just the simple ones...theres an official 4 page listing of all the shortcuts here in this site...just click on the name and select "Open" or "Save"
[link]
oooo! "ctrl E" is merge layers!

haha nice nice! i used his tutorial for my webcomic once..xD
and btw..how do you make your lines look soft..? or your coloring...?

they just look so soft D:! and i wanan learn ;___;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

begger4mcgregor In reply to AppleLove [2006-12-19 09:08:34 +0000 UTC]

The lines were done using Sakura mircon inking pens (mostly 0.05 if I remember correctly). I scanned in the line art, and then using Adobe Photoshop 7 I copied the line art and pasted it on a new canvas so I had a layer under it for color. So now I have a "background" layer and "layer 1" with line art. I then copied the line art again and pasted it on top of "layer 1". This new line art layer is now "layer 2". I selected "layer 2" and went to layer properties and changed it to "multiply". Change "layer 1" to multiply as well. Select "layer 2" and go to the top menus and select Filter>Blur>Gausen blur. Blur "layer 2" about 1-3 pixels. Double click on "layer 2" and change the opacity to your liking. When you are done you should have your original line art and a layer of line art over it making the edges softer. To color I used patterns that I found on the internet (I don't remember where, I'm sorry). When you find a picture you think would make a good pattern, open it and go to Edit>Define Pattern (I think, I don't have PS on this computer so I'm telling you from memory ). Once you have your pattern, use the pen tool to make a work path, but make sure it's closed so that you have to whole area you want colored within the path. If you need help making work paths look at my line art tutorial. Once you have a closed work path that you want a pattern in, make a new layer on top of your "background" layer and below "layer 1". That layer should be "layer 3". Select layer three and select the "Paths" tap at the top of the layers window. Select the paint bucket tool and select it to fill pattern instead of foreground. Select the pattern you want to use and then click the fill path button at the bottom of the "Paths" window (it looks like a filled in circle). I hope all of that made sense. If not just tell me and I'd be glad to make a tutorial on this image next time I can get on my computer

This is really well done.

I don't know what it is, but the Shinigami characters from "Bleach" just look so cool in normal human clothes.
I really like the mixture with the photo. It's a nice blend.

I agree. Kubo Tite always draws the Shinigami looking so badass and hot in normal clothes. That man is truly a genius Thanks, I got the idea from the tutorial, I thought it sounded like a cool idea.

Sweet, I love how bitter and resentful he looks while in the real world! haha! to this I say it is SWEEET!!!

It must be quite hard to make the blend between Anime and a real life photograph! Cool combination though.
