A photo I took yesterday in Poland (I also made the rough sketch).
Yes I know, there are no Koalas in Poland but there is one in my
mind, struggling against extinction.
Koalas are in serious decline suffering from the effects of habitat
destruction, domestic dog attacks, bushfires and road accidents.
The Australian Koala Foundation estimates that there are less than
80,000 koalas left in the wild, possibly as few as 43,000.
There is arguably no legislation that effectively and/or consistently
protects koala habitat anywhere within Australia, not necessarily
because the legislation does not exist, but because there is not
always the political will to adequately resource, implement, police

So this is my first time with critiques, but there is a first for everything so lets have a go at it. I saw this picture about 3 months ago and was like "How in the world does he do that?!" Well I am serious. Koalas are my favorite animal and just to see that someone has the same view about their endangeredment (is that a word?) as me really hits me hard. I personally respect your originality and seriously credit you on your view of the matter. I seriously am not just putting 5 stars for everything because I can, I mean it. I love this piece and it probably is one of my favorite that I have ever seen on the web. Keep up the good work (:

Koalas are my favorite animal and this piece of art just gets to me because I recognize the danger that koalas are in. It would be most unfortunate if they became extinct.

I love your pencil vs camera works, but this one to me is sad, it reminds me of a koala rescued after the fires (which devastated us in 2009) it has brang back a memmory, i cant remeber what they called the koala!

I love your work and how you have even used this to your advantage. You have many watchers and this has got a great message across. Save the koalas! No one told me they were under threat untill I found this. You are a big inspiration for me. Because I draw and capture photo's for a hobby. I may not have been doing it for as long as you, but I know good art and photography when I see it.
In short-if you don't want to read the whole message-keep up the good work.

How do you do it? do you take the photo , draw your sketch using the photo and then add the photo of your hand with your sketch in photoshop? or just take another photo with the sketch in it?

From an Australian, it's probably my favourite from this series, although it could have been bettered by putting it in the right environment - an Australian setting with the eucalyptus trees that Koalas live in perhaps? (I know how hard and expensive that would be though so it's completely understandable)
But hearing your concern for them, I think you'd be glad to hear there is a small not-for-profit Koala Hospital in my town that takes in sick and injured koalas found in the wild after being hit by cars or attacked by domestic animals (:

There seem to be plenty of koalas around my house XD did you know they growl? Well more like grunt... They keep me awake all night with their grunting >.> They are very cute though, especially the babies.

at first, I did not react that the background was not entierly "Authentic", but it works! You are more focused on the fire and then the Koala. A realy nice piece that could be featured in a deforestation or enviromental campaign! Really nice!

This is really good! In school right now we are doing a very big research paper, we have to do it about an environmental issue, and mine is deforestation. I was just wondering if i could use your picture for extra credit. I would of course give you proper credit, and it's okay if you refuse.

What is horrible is the more humans that are born and live the less animals there are. More humans is bad for the animals that some people really love and care about. So the more human the less animals.

Someone has already metioned this briefly, but the image brings powerful imagery to the front of my mind of the Black Saturday bushfires that claimed the lives of over 150 fellow Australians in early 2009. The media found hope in the image of koala, Sam, who was found in a terrible condition by firefighters. The photo of a firefighter giving Sam water from a water bottle was a message of endurance, but also of great suffering for all things involved, be they human or animal or tree. Your piece here, with the trees and fire and koala remind me of similar things. I very much like it, and find myself very moved but I don't know how to express what I feel. All this contextual knowledge is really strengthening the art. Wonderful.
