Your line work is insane...so much going on in there.

It is an amazing eye for detail you have but remember that negative space plays into the page as a guide for the reader. Use that to your advantage, especially in a style that is so intense. Break up the amazing details work of your panels with the use of standard gutters, as it will provide just enough of an instantaneous mental break that the human mind needs to push from one panel to the next and absorb the image.

I could follow the story just fine of the guy breaking in and fighting the dragons...the issue is in the framework not being there to flow those beautiful images through the page without a large number of readers that pick this up to be forced to look at the page and then have to read it multiple times to actually get what is going on.

That works against any artist, as it breaks the golden rule of any media for storytelling...

" The number 1 rule of making any story successful and great, especially in comics, is storytelling. Storytelling is to never break the illusion from beginning to end. If you break the illusion with technical issues bringing questions to the readers mind that aren't  story specific, you have failed. The reason for this is that you've just lost every reader that had to stop the story process for overcoming the technical distraction. "

- your's truly

You beautiful work but give it some room to be the piece you intended with  every individual panel.

Think about the top selling artists that inspire you and notice how they design the pages and panel breakdowns as a framework to hold the intense world they create.

Your style is one of those that people can read and follow, once broken down and absorbed.

Next thing to take into account is the suggestion of negative space in your panels. Give the characters a little room to breathe as well within their world. It is the second illusion breaking point. Your shots are great but with more negative space, they would be so much more.

Your detail work is an inspiration, as having that much detail with a ' clean line ' style...it is a match made in heaven and what many artists strive for. However, you have to not only control the details but the space the details are held within.

It is like I once read about Oscar Mayer...the original packaging was bulky and had different advertising styles on it, etc...then the original design came when the Kraft people did a public panel of consumers and every one of them when asked about the overall product presentation, complained:

" The product is amazing but I don't like the packaging. "

You have the same issue here and it is an outstanding issue to have, as it is more commonly the opposite issue for comic artists.

don't take my word for it though...Do some test pages and compare to this set and see what you think for yourself on the use of the negative space in your work as a technical tool to control framing and pace, as well as depth within the story to give it mass and dimension.

The end result will tell you if it is a fit for you or not.

Keep up the great work!

WOOOOOOOOOW!!!! Sorry I'm now just reading your post and WOOOOOW thank you so very much!!! In fact I cannot thank you enough, you absolutely know your stuff my friend!! I've been going through A LOT of my current pages and doing this exactly (you will see them soon)...adding more negative space and a little less detail. I'm truly finding my style and really how to make things even more dynamic by working with a little less, if you know what I mean. I've really been working on my panel flow and adding more negative space and you are exactly spot on with your advice. I'm in your debt for such words and to pay this debt I will create even better art and use your words of encouragement and suggestion. Thank you thank you thank you ChargeGraphite, you've really lit a fire in me to become a better visionary

Glad I could help and I'm even more impressed you read what I was saying through the typo issues...heh.

( I type too fast for the forum to keep up in a lot of cases. Usually, I have to write it on word and then cut and paste the comment to keep it in place but I out type that as well... Anyway... )

Another suggestion, if you are interested...

Study the differences in how artists like Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, George Perez and David Finch pace through pages with their extremely detailed styles, as well as how they bring focal points forward within the art to add depth through the details.

Then, study artist like Mark Book, Joe Mad., Alvin Lee and Erik Larsen, which have a much more specific detailing style and use a lot more open negative space in their work.

Example:

Jim, Todd, and Marc all bring their characters to the front with the extreme detail throughout the image in the panel but make the focal point larger and more to the forefront of the scene, no matter the perspective...the key character element is always larger.

That's one of the things that makes their stuff stand out, even as detailed as it is.

David makes his stuff the focal point by each panel containing a primary element, even through all the detail, you know what you are suppose to look at.

George is a little different, as he uses all of the techniques possible. He would bring characters more forward, make them larger and would use a single action panel as well...all of which are key to moving the story.

Then, you have the other end of the spectrum...artists like Erik Larsen, Mark Brooks, Alvin Lee, J. Scott Campbell, Joe Mad., etc. These guys use a much more open style, using more extreme negative space elements in their panels and page design.

The final thing is to zoom in and out on your panel designs...

That second panel closeup would have looked even better if you'd have made that exact shot of the landing larger, with the longer shot of the dragon fight at that same long shot depth with more negative space to the room, if that makes sense.

Study how they do it and test what works for you.

I meant can't spelling error..does that fix it? Brandon's always so busy "What can I say, I love drawing all the little details." Anyone that colours it is equally crazed.
