I find, strange that although the German wehrmacht had good light machine guns and sub machine gun weapons, they did not have semi-automatic rifles.

The Wehrmacht did have semi-auto rifles, they just weren't as prolific. The first German semi-auto rifle, the Gewehr 41, wasn't exactly reliable, and while the second semi-auto German rifle, the Gewehr 43, handled better, the Germans didn't produce a whole lot of them.
