Hey, thanks for asking Not until the end. I like to slowly smudge all the pencil as I'm working. I want the paper to be filthy at the end. I go over the same lines many times and build them up. At the very end I will use a sheet of typing paper to put under my hand and trace over the darkest outlines, eyelashes and highlights. I'm totally a slow builder. It takes me way longer to do these that it should.
I don't know what a mahlstick is but I'm gonna look it up

Oh, haha. That's just a stick with a  soft pad on the end that artists, especially painters, use to brace their working hand for precision without having it touch the surface of the image. I suppose many people use them and don't even know the name but my dad always knew the proper word for everything so we picked up a lot of obscure terms from him. Anyhow, keep up the great work!

Just looked it up. Wow! That's interesting that I've never seen one of those before. Makes sense though.
