Description
Name: Jioni
Gender: Female
Age: Cub
Rank: Cub
Personality:
+Sweet—Jioni is a very tender-hearted cub, despite her upbringing. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.
+Agreeable—This trait is sadly her most useful trait as a female lion in the pride she’s in. Despite her mother’s temper and bitterness, she seems to have inherited her fathers easily swayed demeanor.
=Observant—While she’s highly observant, she isn’t always clever. She has a habit of telling her observations to the wrong lions—often annoying them or offending them on accident.
-Distractable—Most cubs are not overly focused on serious matters, and Jioni is no exception. She is easily distracted and finds the natural world much more interesting than other lions. She has many questions about how things work, and these can lead her to ditch her chores or forget what someone just said to her.
-Socially Inept—Jioni has a hard time figuring out social cues, much to the frustration of her mother. This often gets her into trouble, or accused of being rude, which horrifies Jioni, who never intends to cause offense.
Bio: Jioni was born to two deeply unhappy lions, Kavu and Kumaliza. In the aftermath of the flood that swept through Nguvu, Hisada, the newest leader of the pride, demanded that the ranks of the pride be filled. He suggested multiple strategies, not all tasteful, including encouraging the females to bear more children for the sake of the dwindling population.
Kumaliza was tired of her position low in the hierarchy. She figured that if she immediately followed the new leader’s order, she’d be more respected—or perhaps her child would be set up for greater things, giving her access to a better life. All she wanted was a son who could make her proud, and give her a boost in status.
Kavu too, wanted a son. He’d been born a rouge lion and had trouble fitting in Nguvu. He was not a naturally violent or dominant person, nor particularly skilled in any specific task. He knew that having a son would help his wilting reputation—and he was hesitantly ‘friends’ with Kumaliza. She was a hard lion to make friends with, always muttering and complaining to the other females/low ranked lions, and then suddenly acting sweet, docile and respectful to higher males. Despite this, they got along well enough—Kavu would usually stay somewhat quiet, listening to her rants, and occasionally putting in a comment or two. They figured they’d be suitable enough as parents—how hard could it be?
They did not do very well. Kumaliza’s pregnancy was easy enough, but the trouble started when Jioni was born. She was not the cub either of her parents dreamed of.
Kavu felt trapped—his plan hadn’t worked out very well, and now he was a father to a cub he didn’t particularly want, with a partner he didn’t desire or love. Kumaliza, meanwhile, assumed this must somehow be the fault of her weak willed mate. If only she had tried this with a more masculine male…
Kumaliza tried to work with what she had. But her daughter was odd, interested in plants, insects, clouds, the birds that flew overhead—instead of the practical affairs her mother tried to teach her. While she was affectionate as any cub, she spoke rarely, with a soft, low voice. She was strange, and Kumaliza and Kavu weren’t the only ones to notice it. Several females of the pride joked that it made sense that those two would have such a child.
Kumaliza was outraged, and this coloured a lot of her interactions with her daughter. She was rarely physically affectionate with Jioni, often snapping at her or scorning her. Kavu, on the other paw, was friendlier, though he didn’t spend much time with her. He preferred to avoid Kumaliza, who had soured on their relationship, and was generally nearby his daughter.
Things did not get any better as a plague swept through the prides. Nguvu’s borders were closed completely, making tensions rise and an air of panic rise amongst the lions of the pride. Jioni is too young to fully understand what’s happening, but she seems frightened of the deaths of her peers. Kavu is silently having some strong regrets about joining this pride at all.
