Everything had to be perfect. Matthew was running around the house making last minute adjustments. It did not help that he had a small polar bear, a dog and a kitten following after him.

'Okay I just need to make sure that the pancakes are---!' Matthew cut of mid sentence to regain his footing from tripping over the small white puppy that had plopped itself down in front of his foot as he paused to think. 'Mon Dieu Krieger, you could have killed me.' The puppy merely wagged his tail and yipped happily.

Matthew rolled his eyes before glancing at the clock once more. 'Maple! I've got to hurry!' he exclaimed, this time tripping over the small white and cream spotted cat, rushing to the kitchen. He paused for a second to gather his wits before cracking his knuckles and setting to work on making the best pancake batch he had ever made.

'Paix you're lucky that I didn't step on you. Next time be more careful,' he scolded the kitten as he gathered all the ingredients. He cast a quick look at the calendar and chuckled. On May 31st Gilbert had written in big black letters THE AWESOME ME'S BIRTHDAY! Matthew told Gilbert to get out of the house early this morning in order to make him the perfect birthday ever. The only thing he let the Prussian have a say in was what he wanted for dinner. The man had requested pancakes with a big grin on his face before Matthew handed him some money and told him to indulge himself.

Making pancakes was an old skill of Matthew's. Gilbert bragged about Matthew's skills to whoever he could. Said he had a magic touch and that they always seemed to have the perfect combination of soft golden fluffiness combined with the sweet, nuttiness of the maple syrup Gilbert drenched his plate in. Gilbert could almost out eat Matthew on maple syrup, something that surprised the quiet man even more than the Prussian's crazy outbursts.

Matthew flipped the last fluffy piece of heaven onto a nearby plate when he heard the door open and a loud voice call out. 'Hey Birdie I'm home!'

Matthew threw a glare at the nearby bear. 'If you touch any of those pancakes I will not feed you for a month.' Kuma gulped before slinking back to hide under the breakfast nook. Paix and Krieger had already run off to greet their dad and Matthew followed quickly. 'Wait Gil, stay in the foyer for a second!' he called.

'Aw Biridie, what if I want to come and see you?' Matthew heard Gilbert whine. He chuckled. How could this scary punk be so adorable? Matthew walked into the foyer only to see Gilbert sitting on the floor being attacked by cuteness. Krieger had his paws on his chest licking every inch of skin he could find while Paix had managed to find his way up on Gilbert's shoulder to nuzzle the man's cheek. Gilbird was in his usual perch, nestled in the silver locks that Matthew loved to play with so much.

'I think I just overloaded on cuteness,' Matthew chuckled, bringing the Prussian's attention to him.

'Birdie!' he exclaimed. He gently moved the animals to safe positions before standing up and sweeping Matthew in a massive bear hug. 'I missed you so much today! I thought I would get to spend my birthday with my awesome fiancé.'

'Gil I need air,' Matthew gasped before Gilbert set him gently back on the ground. 'I'm sorry, but I had some things to do today,' Matthew explained as he tugged Gilbert towards the living room.

'What things?' Gilbert asked before freezing in his tracks. Matthew really had worked hard. White lilies intertwined with delicate roses here and there and a soft sent of ginger filled the room. Gilbert wasn't one for flowers much but the balance that the soft petals brought to the room filled him with wonder and awe. He then brought his attention to the rest of the room. It was spotless. A pile of movies sat near the television and from what he could see they were all his favourites. Blankets and pillows made the giant sectional sofa seem all the more inviting. Through the door he could see the table set with accents of black and red, candles burning, bringing a soft glow to the sharp contrast. A small pile of presents rested on the coffee table, each wrapped differently with aspects of the Prussian eagle and the iron cross.

Matthew stood off to the side, nervously chewing his lip. He had never done this much for Gilbert on his birthday. He wasn't sure about the flowers but the ginger had smelled so good and what kind of fiancé would he be if he didn't have roses? The lilies were there for symbolism alone. He imagined the Prussian's majesty to be even greater than what the flowers could represent. He was about to speak his apologies when scarlet eyes turned his way.

'You did all this Birdie?' Gilbert's voice was quiet. Matthew nodded slightly.

'I have fresh pancakes in the kitchen as well. I figured we could eat then curl up to one of your favourite movies,' he meekly stated.

Gilbert's mouth twitched. 'All of this, for me?'

'Of course it's for you. I wanted to do something special for your birthday since you always come up with the best things on mine.'

Matthew barely had time to register the widening grin before he was pulled into a warm chest. 'Thank you Birdie, I love everything.'

'Even the flowers?'

'Even the flowers.'

Matthew sighed in relief, wrapping his arms around the body in front of him. Everything had to be perfect and everything was. 'I'm glad that you like it.'

'Like it? I love it. Almost as much as I love you,' Gilbert pulled back a bit smiling and placed a gentle kiss on Matthew's cheek. 'You are amazing Birdie.'

Matthew blushed and stood up straight placing a light kiss on Gilbert's lips. 'I love you too. Happy Birthday.'

Gilbert smiled before lifting the Canadian off the ground and carrying him bridal style to the kitchen. 'Now Birdie, let's eat!'
