Looking at the human, it wasn’t hard to tell they had little time left. Even in the golden light, their skin had a grayish hue, like the rocks the wanderer so carefully tended. Their limbs were frail and shook beneath their weight. Raaga recognized this human. They had grown up here, a tiny thing that had watered the mountain’s flowers and greeted every snail with a whispered hello. This human had helped care for one of the mountains, and Raaga felt something ache in his chest.

The human was dying, artificial and canned air kept in a bag beside them. Raaga didn’t know it’s purpose, but he knew his own purpose. Gently, carefully, the wanderer breathed. Air rustled the pines, the wildflowers, stirring up the golden pollen and dust along the walking path. The human kept their eyes closed as they breathed in, deeply, something in their face relaxing.

Raaga watched for a second more, noting the peace on the human’s face. Then the wanderer began to wander once more. He might not be able to save all creatures in the mountain, but he could at least give this one a good last breath.
