ANH2-9X ANNIHILATOR II

over the years I've seen a ton of updates to the Annihilator. IICs, Maxi Clan Tech Wonder Machines. And TBH, pretty much none of them really seemed to grab the design for me. Does that mean I did any better? Nope. Might even be worse. But here is my attempt to update the Anni to ilClan era specs and availability, anyways.

The head was inspired by a neckless version I remember seeing years ago on MWO, IIRC from before the Anni was added. I don't recall the original artist, or even the post, just the basic shape. The rest is pure me (aside from the obvious references to the OG Anni. I debated between a new design for the Rasalhague Dominion, the Wolves or what.. and finally said screw it.. stop clinging to the old, design it by the new. And so Hesperus II it is.

The recently sighted Annihilator II has come as a surprise to the ilClan and the neighbors of the battered Lyran Commonwealth.

Apparently the culmination of a project that began before Grey Monday, after the recent Falcon Descant and backlash from double dealing with the Wolves, the design was designated as highest priority by Archon Trillian Steiner and General of the Armies Roderick Steiner, as a necessary defensive unit to project an aura of strength and unyielding Lyran resolve against all enemies.

While the full genesis of the origin of the Annihilator II is not clear at this time, it's known that the Commonwealth, like most of the Houses, had toyed with recreating the design almost since it first appeared with the Dragoons, in 3009. It's likely that detailed plans may have been acquired from Arc Royal before the Bombardment. Regardless, Defiance Industries ability to produce full Clan spec Technology made it possible.

The core of the Annihilator was always a strong punch. The Defiance built update retains that focus, and it's weapons loadout differs little from the old model the Dragoons used during the Clan Invasion, with a quad of LB-10X autocannons backed by four lasers, in this case two ER Medium Lasers and two Small Pulse Lasers. The main difference is they are all Clan spec. Feeding those autocannons are separate 3 ton magazines in each side torso.

The tonnage saved by the use of modern materials went to address the two major issues of the design, the low speed and relatively light armor. The new model is powered by the venerable Vlar 300 fusion Engine, increasing it's top speed by over 20 kph, while helping maintain it's rugged durability. Adding to this is the surprising use of 19 tons of clan Ferro Lamellor Armor, with each torso magazine protected by CASE II.

As a design meant to act as a Tower Defense of critical installations, an added emphasis was the ability to engage Aerospace Fighters. To accomplish this, the new Annihilator mounts a TharHesAres 8b Targeting system, an update on the unit found on the Hatchetman, just in front of the cockpit. Combined with the use of cluster munitions, this makes strafing runs against these mechs a likely suicide mission. Likewise with the prevalence of infantry, augmented or otherwise, it was deemed worthwhile to sacrifice some firepower for a strong anti-personnel capability.

It is unknown how many are currently deployed within the Commonwealth, but both the Royal Palace on Tharkad and the main facilities on Hesperus II are each defended by a full company of these machines.
