Description (I realize the following can be connected just as much to men, but this picture is more directed at women.)

I think girls need a reality check... they are always either too boastful or so down on themselves that it's all they ever think about. I decided to portray Vera in this situation, because I'm one of those types myself. It's always good to humble yourself and recognize your flaws and learn how to deal with them, or accept them... but at some point you have to come to the conclusion, that you are who you are, and as long as you are healthy there is no reason to worry about your appearance to the point that the mirrors you look in distort and show you as something you're not.

This is a take on an old idea I had and drew AGES ago: [link] but the idea is reversed... Instead of seeing what she wishes she could be... she is seeing what she thinks she is. Either way, the image you see is not what it ought to be...

NO, not Vera! she's to cute to dislike her own reflection!

but you have a good point there and I agree with you

You know..... I feel like this a lot too. One other artist on Da did a similar concept but used photographs in an interesting way to show womens looks and their perceptions. I really like how you captured this feeling here. I feel like it sometimes too. BUt mostly my depression makes it worse. I try to ignore it and block those emotions as much as possible. I like being happy

This is something that is very close to my heart, I guess I have a lot of issues about my body and food. I'm ill, I'm always Ill and recently I lost a lot of weight fast and dropped from a size 16 to a 6 in well under a year, but when I look at myself all I see if fat, even though I can see all my bones and the muscles in my arms and I hate wearing a seat belt because it hurts my hip bones so much, but I still can't eat, because it hurts and I don't want to get fatter. My teacher is worried and says I am under weight, my boyfriend thinks I'm unhealtherly thin and my own mother can't bare to look at me... And all I see is fat.
Its stupid really, I know it is, but still. And everyone I talk to hate the girls in the mags and wants a girl with meat and muffin tops over their jeans, my self included, so I guess we see everything different from how we see our selves.

*hugs* I think you're a wonderful person, I can see that in your unique and beautiful art, and I'm sure there are many more things about yourself you could look at that are wonderous instead of something as fickle as body weight I do more than hope that you will realize it soon

I am so sorry to bore you with a silly life story I really am! But the image and the idea behind it (well the way that I took the image on board) just struck a deep cord in me and i am sure that it has done the same for many other people too!

Excellent lineart and beautiful picture concept. One of the things I really love about your work is that you go beyond just drawing anthro art and actually inject meaning and beauty into your art. Keep up the awesome work! =3

Your lineart is always so neat. I like that a lot! Your idea is great, as well as the title. And you're 100% right-- most women are too down on themselves-- and the ones who aren't? Well, they have an inflated ego! At least, that's what I've learned.

Of course, there is always an exception. I'm not really too hard on myself. I recognize some of my flaws- to the point that I might bring them up on purpose, or crack a joke about them. But I suppose it's better that I can admit I have them, to pretend that they're not there.

I love this. Will we see a colored version someday?

Yes, pride leads to a fall... and why vanity is a sin.

Vera shows us that deftly in both aspects.

Aww, she's beautiful! It's great to see someone drawing people/anthros at a normal, healthy weight instead of an unrealistic rail-thin figure!

I for one think that this thin crazy is ridiculous. I don't know if I'm crazy or the general populous is, but for me, the natural way a woman looks, soft and round is very sexy to me. I am attracted to many forms of female anatomy, but that for me is ideal. I don't mean obese, I just mean a little weight is a healthy thing and perfectly natural, and naturally attractive to me.

Beautiful image
It really has a strong sense of feeling behinid it. I like images that have emotion behind the piece
Too many people these days beat themselves up because of the way they look...society tends to make them focus on the appearance... Gotta love the masks eh
great work

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with heavier figures either. They aren't necessarily flawed or ugly, just different. I myself am very heavy, though I don't have my health, it isn't as a result of my weight, my weight is a result of my health in my case. However, I know of people even heavier than me that are healthy as a horse.

The image is very sweet, and it transmits a lot of feeling, specially in people like meh, with "big bones" and poor autoesteem. The inking is very good but the best thing of this picture is the message it has.Vera's expression is good too.

Every girl who can should see this pic so she knows not to worry about her image. Life is just too short trying to look like a Photoshopped picture in a magazine.

I do not think of Vera as Fat. But I think even thin girls have the same image problem, which causes many to starve to death even with food all around them. The problem with the super thin is that At a certain point the starving body starts feel great even as it starts dying.

Vera I glad you have a super husband.

Wonderful! I know that I am not what society deems beautiful in a lot of ways and this piece definitely portrays how I feel sometimes.
But luckily, I have a husband who thinks I'm the most beautiful in the world whether I'm 90 or 300 lbs! So it doesn't matter. He loves me, what more do I need?
I love the message of this piece. Exceptional work!

What an interesting (and sadly, familiar) portayal of what a lot of us see in the mirror. I decided a long time ago that I'm just perfect the way I am-- but it takes a lot of pain, and patience to come to that conclusion.

What a sad look she wears, look how her posture shows the dissaproval of her own body. How sad. I hope she realizes that she's a pretty kitty and that everybody else loves her.
