I don't particularly like Dark McEdgerton all that much, but after a rewatching of the Force Awakens today his look has kind of become iconic, after a fashion. Hopefully his character will be more interesting in Episode VIII, I am pretty pumped for that along with Rogue One.

AND ON THAT THOUGHT (Rant Ahead!)

The Force Awakens definitely throws us into the setting expecting us to just follow along with the story. I haven't read the books leading up to the Force Awakens, which I understand expand upon the galaxy's current situation, but I believe the movie should be able to stand on its own and give us a clear understanding as to what the HELL is going on.

The First Order should be, for all intents and purposes, classified as a terrorist organization to the galaxy. They're out in the middle of Wild Space doing all sorts of crazy things, totally and entirely focused on not running the galaxy, but simply bringing it to its knees with Starkiller Base. This is understandable, as they swiftly want to squash the New Republic, but this is never really stated. Its just Galactic Empire II: Electric Boogaloo.

Starkiller Base should have been seen under construction or at the very least just a base of operations and the saved the star system destroying weapon saved for a later film. Right now its Death Star III that doesn't last nearly as long and doesn't have nearly as big of impact, aside from wiping out five planets in a single shot. That entire scene was incredibly pointless and we didn't even care about the planets it destroyed. If it was Coruscant, sure, might have given a damn because we're familiar with it, but it was just some random planet they made up for the movie.

The New Republic is entirely vacant in this movie and it would have really done the movie a service to have them around doing. . . something. This whole "Resistance" organization is just a hollow Rebellion copy to oppose the First Order in the same light, but could have still easily been labelled the New Republic Military. It was talked about and existed for all of three seconds before it was obliterated by Starkiller Base. In the artbook, several designs of Republic ships are present and they even have their own super weapon, a huge ship called the Hammerhead.

From what little I could find out about the ship is that it was design to breach planetary shields with its heavily reinforced prow and then launch fighters into the distorted hole, basically like a giant battering ram. This would have given the New Republic a much stronger presence in the galaxy, clearly showing that they have dealt with First Order hold outs before and have built a weapons to compensate. It doesn't seem that far fetched for them to even have it and I really hope the idea carries into a future film.

Its also sad the Resistance only consisted of updated X-Wings, it would have been nice to see some modified Y-Wings or A-Wings, hell, even B-WINGS that was built for the express purpose of HEAVY ASSAULT. Not saying the X-Wings were bad, they were pretty cool, but we had far more ships the first time in a New Hope.

On characters, I was pretty pleased with protagonists, Poe and Finn are best bros fore life and forever and Rey. . . did a little too much too fast. I don't mind that she's Luke II, but they really stretched my suspension of disbelief with her. For the showdown between her and Kylo Ren, it would have been nice to have heard "Use the Force" by either Obi-wan, Yoda, Anakin, SOMEONE and then have them guide her movements to deflect his blows. A similar instance happened in the Splinter of the Minds Eye novel where Obi-wan temporarily possessed Luke to fend off Vader, at a time when Luke had zero lightsaber training.

AND ON KYLO REN. . . well.

Each time I hear Kylo Ren, I get an image of this guy and his hilarious antics. Its lazily awful. And Ben as his real name? Now you're just picking and choosing whatever EU thing you want without actually sticking to the source material. . . not that I expected it, but it would be nice if you're going to stick making up a brand new thing, use brand new ideas.

AND THEN SNOKE.

What kind of a name is Snoke? Its dumb. He shouldn't have even been in the movie, just mentioned, like the sorta-Emperor he is and just have him show up later. I was really intrigued when I saw him all huge and imposing the first time and actually wanted him to be 30ft tall, it would make things. . interesting to say the least. For now I guess we'll just have to wait and see what role he plays.

BUT THEN HUX.

What are you Hux? What are you even doing? You make a pretty lousy Space Hitler. Where's Thrawn? Just paint Hux blue, give him red eyes and have him be cunning as hell and everything would be better. It would have made the relationship between Hux and Ren more interesting if they played it out like Thrawn and Joruus. Ren is clearly young and inexperienced in this sort of thing and would need some leadership training from a seasoned veteran.

AND

Maz.

Don't make her more then a thousand years old, that just makes Yoda less unique. C'mon, don't outdo Yoda, that's dumb.

Also Max von Sydow's character should have totally been a jedi and got into a force wizard duel with Ren at the beginning.

And now I'm out of things to say. Despite what I've said, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it for anyone who likes Star Wars.

EDIT: And since people keep asking, NO I DIDN'T LIKE HOW THEY HANDLED PHASMA, I figured that was a given. She's coming back in the next one so woo.
