This is Stellaluna, the grey headed flying fox! Miss Stellaluna is a special doll, as I am a big fan of fruit bats and wanted to make one for many years. She is lifesize- 14.5" from ears to toes and sporting a 3 ft wingspan. Everything on this doll is poseable- her ears, head and neck, wings, thumbs and even her grabby toes. She is great for a batty cuddle and also hangs beautifully in the air from a small loop attached to her back- or upside down from her feet!This doll is made from sculpey, plastic ball and socket armature, wire, polyfill, faux fur, fabric, acrylic paint, sculpey glaze. 100% hand made by myself with faux materials.

Make one with a warmer and a refillable milk bag, and you have a perfect surrogate doll for animal rehabilitators to use with orphaned pups. You could sell copies for a good price to rehabilitation centers that specialize on Flying foxes, which normally have to be kept in zoos as hand raising them makes them too used to humans to survive in the wild. Such a doll, combined with a camouflage suit, could allow the babies to fly free. At least, itβs worth sending a prototype to an expert to experiment with.

Itβs worth looking into. As bats are smarter then most birds, avoiding imprinting would require more realistic surrogates than are typically used for birds.
