I went to go seethis statue for a GCSE religious studies school trip. as we were waiting to go into the cathedral, there was a group of... 8, maybe 9 year old children waiting outside and went "I know the one underneath is a boy because i can see his willy"....the funniest part of the whole trip!

hello. i'm doing a college documentary on religion and i need some filler images. i was wondering if you'd be so kind as to let me use this one?
it's non-profit, and only my tutors and possibly class-mates need see it. i was hoping to submit the finished video here or on youtube afterwards, but if you have a problem with that prospect i can remove your picture from my video before any public viewing.
please get back to me as soon as you can; i'm working to a deadline.
thankyou for your time.

When I visited Coventry several years ago, it was twilight and the sun was setting. I was in the ruins of the old cathedral, the one bombed during the blitz. I remember looking up at the remains of the stained glass and hearing the most magical, ethereal singing, the voices of children. It was not hard for my imagination to take flight. It was in actuality a children's choir practicing in the church across the way, and I remember seeing the above sculpture on the building when I went to sit in and listen to them. I lost all of my lovely travel pictures, thank you for posting this and letting me remember a happier time of my life.

there are a few of us who live here
and yes this is why I always liked this statue. One of my early memories is me being 5 and a bridemaid at my aunts wedding and seeing that willy. As i got older it was always a naughty treat to see this, the devil is nude and has his cock showing. Epstein was sending out some interesting messages with this sculpture
Thanks for the

aye but i believe in neither st michael or the devil, and im tiring of being subjected to religion every day of my life so you can see from my point of view this is one of the most famous religious icons our city has, to be fair id much prefer my city to be remembered for its once booming music centre. oh well.

lol- know what you mean, we manage a bit now and again re music
personally I really like the Whittle arch - great piece of modern architecture and could be iconic in a non religous
take care

mannnn i have to look at this eyesore every day of my life, coventry sucks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlissStock In reply to come-play-dying- [2006-12-06 20:33:26 +0000 UTC]

well Coventry has its bad points but I wouldn't call this an statue and eyesore, its an amazing piece of sculpture on a fantastic peice of 20th century architecture and if you can't see that then I feel for you. Lets be honest there's plenty around Cov that I could call an eyesore but this isn't one
Coventry sucks less than some places and more than others I guess, depends how many places you've been to but sorry you feel like that, and hope you get to live somewhere where you more happy

Great photo
That statue scared me when I was little. My mum's side of the family lives in england, so I've been there quite often in the summer, and when I was younger I went there. I had nightmares about that cathedral haha.

my grandparents worshiped at the cathedral so I went there alot to I know what you mean about scary as they are so big however I remember getting more facinated that you could see the devils willy so the scared turned to curious- they both have delicious bodies even with that goodness /evil theme going on

Thanks for making this great Epstein masterpiece accessible... I love England for so many reasons, not the least of which is the wealth of gorgeous statuary and architecture. I've only been there once, around 8 years ago and I really miss it.

thank you. Your comments are really appreciated- and you are the second person who knew that it was Epstein that sculpted it.
As someone who was born and grew up in Coventry this has always been part of my life. I'm pleased that you enjoyed your visit here and hope that you are able to come back again

it truely is surreal and one of my most favourite sculptures
perhaps because I've seen it on and off all my life ( the cathedral was consecrated in 1962
