About the background, I did it in a few layers. The base layer would just be a light grey tone. Then I used a putty eraser to get the highlights and then filled in the shadows with a darker pencil. The last layer would be just a general shading over of just about all of the background to make sure the grey is the right shade.
And use a tissue and do lots and lots of blending! Just make sure that it doesn't end up messy.
I think that's pretty much what I did there. Hope it helps!
