Description This is definatly a work in progress.

I haven't done a damn thing with lighting, texturing, or the layout. Actually, I haven't even finished about 50% of the modelling that I am going to do. I just posted this because I was tired of working on it and decided to throw it out there to see what people thought of it so far.

Created and rendered in Cinema 4D.
All models made by me.

Wow this looks really nice. Very shiny and clean. Love the lighting and the spiders (the six legged variety of course 0.o) XD

Nice hallway, the spiders could use some blazing red eyes and a search/spot light casting down...maybe

Love the reds and blacks. I agree with the others about adding in additional layers (but then again, this is a WIP as you indicated).

So, posing. I think it would be groovy if you had one or two on the walls or ceiling to further emphasize the 'not-human' vibe you want to convey.

I is pritty big scene. But you have to play aroun with Lighting. And the shape of the mechanics are very repeatable. Maybe some dirthmaps or somehting like scraches. It is very clean and unreal. I would put an ambients under "spiders" with very low intensity because you lose a detail there. And on the top also there has to be no compleate black. I like it.

I don't know if this is an aspiration of yours, but mannn, this would look awesome in a video game!! A lot of professionals (i.e. people who get paid for doing this) don't do as nice a job!!

seems like you already have the lighting down pretty well. your modeling skills are superb if you ask me. i can't say i've heard of the program that you're using, however. on the other hand, there's a bunch of new ones out there that a lot of people haven't used yet. as for me, my school just teaches us 3D max 6 (they're upgrading to 7 soon) and the standard adobe software, as well as macromedia programs.
keep up the hard work. i'm glad that you're committed to it. seeing the finished product is always satisfying. awesome job!

Hmmm.,

I would have made all lighting come from the spiders. The corridor would be illuminated by this, and all shades would look rather creepy, specially if the red eyes glowed as well. Texturing might contain nice reflecting surfacs, that would reflect the walls and other items on the spider trunks.

The corridor is nice and symmetric, but I would have gone for a slightly more chaothic architecture, showing not a single corridor, but two merging into one, or a glance allowing the viewer to imagine the spiders would come from anywhere. They could be on the ceiling and walking with some legs in the ceiling, adn some on teh wall, jsut to break the 'order' in th scene. I'd have positioned them in walking 'motion', that is, some legs up, some in the ground, to give the impression of more realistic moving.

Also something broken, perhaps, thrown on a corner, giving the impression of these spiders having found an albandoned alien craft (or abandoned human craft, if the spiders are the 'aliens'). Maybe add more suspended cables on the ceiling, a plate or two missing. Spiders with different kinds of weaponry would be cool too...

Loved your scene, dude!

That's just amazing dude. If you made it darker it could look really Doom 3-esque. Great work.

That's too cool! You could add some very small bumpmaps to make it look more real; nothing's perfectly smooth, ya know I'm gonna fave this!

To be honest, I am not quite sure yet. Another individual recommended that I go for a retro look and I may just give that a whirl.

nice stuff man, my only suggestion is to go into photoshop and add alot of dust and scratches to all the textures, so it looks more real. Try it and you will be amazed at how much it boosts the realism

ah i like what you've done with it. though i think that it would be more impressive if you had some depth of field to accentuate the middle spider.

This is definitely coming along greatly. not knowing much about 3D rendering, I might be wrong in stating that, it's a work in progress because there isnt much definition of texture on the spiders or the walls and background? Maybe? lol
I like this a lot.

bluespeed9 In reply to bratchny [2004-03-04 18:54:23 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there really isn't any texture on anything in this scene. I've only applied simple colors to the "plastic-like" material you see there and used some lighting techniques to fake a little depth to the materials. Actually, right now I am working on learning how to do dirt maps.

vampbabe [2004-03-04 09:43:24 +0000 UTC]

Fantastic stuff. I'm a huge fan of 3D so immediately fell into my good books. But now, for the scruples. It's too clean. I think the metal texture could use with a bit more sheen or rougher texture or shadow to make it look less computer generated. Love your choice of colour scheme. Great work.

Maybe I have said it before, but I'll say it again... your modeling abilities have grown ten-fold since summertime, what's you secret? The hallway, the lighting, the joints on the spider all look professional. I think we started with Cinema 4D around the same time, but it's obvious who know how to use it to it's full potential. This sure would make a great vid game. A little dirt here and there like that one comment said might add just the touch you need... I'm sure the next thing you'll conqure with be texture. Great job!

What's my secret? My secret is staying up until about 5 or 6 AM every morning reading every tutorial I can find and then doing them. Plus, I also spend a great deal of time thinking about 3D when I am not on my computer and looking at objects in real life (when I am walking around, sitting in class, etc.) and thinking about how I would model them if I was actually going to model them. Basically, the secret is just putting in a good deal of time and having a real interest in the material itself.

As for the materials, I'm starting to get a decent hold on them but I am really trying to focus my modelling skills and come close to "perfection" before I move on to materials and then eventually, lighting.

Sounds like you have a good plan and have your head together about what you want to accomplish... organization is a big part and time ( I'm guessing ). Thanks for the detailed reply... has helped me realize something about myself

Will be fun seeing your development... I am sure Pixar and Lucas Arts will be calling in no time.

Nice, love the perspective and the modelling you've done so far. I know you haven't done the texturing yet, but if you do, i think you could make this into a really awesome scene.
Maybe make some broken lights, like it's a deserted spaceship of some sorts. A lot of scratched up metal and dirt etc. Anyway, good luck!
