Amazing job! I loved how you used such drastic tones to show shading; I'll be watching you.

Beautiful work! I like the way you have light up his face (and as usual I love how you draw the eyes). I've tried with colour pencils but it seems I've some problems with rendering the light and shadow, and especially in the process of blending colours. So many things to learn..

Well actually the principal issue with the color seems to be in the balance that you have to maintain between the different shades : You need to have enough midtones and some really sustained tones to highlight the whole work with a unity and harmony between the colors of course ...
Well I admit that saying like this it seems complicated... but I swear that it's actually very more easy that you could think , lol
Thanks for the kind words anyway , always appreciated a lot

Yes, you're right:in fact I found a bit difficult to keep a harmony among the different colours in the work.. and I have to say that, for example, with pencils and charcoal I like to use q-tips or similar items to shade the tones while with colored pencils I can't do it (at least..for now )

I do use Q-tips , cotton balls or even...my finger to shade the graphite pencil as well !
You can do the same working on colored pieces if you use pastels... pastels are actually made to be shaded like this ...
But with colored pencils like on my last Heath you have to shade directly with the pencils , you come with a color on another one and lightly shade both to make them 'melt' in some way .
About the harmony ... you can't be wrong if you used primary colors ( for strong effect ) or secondary colors for a lighter effect but of course all of this is basic and can be done in many other ways !

Hmm, you gave me an idea.. maybe the problem is the different way of use between the pastels and the colored pencils: in effect I found them in an old pencil case of school-years (many years ago ) and maybe the cause that I can't shade well with them is owing to the fact that they're not pastels (I admit that I didn't know the difference ) I think I need some shopping Thank you very much for the explanation!!

You're very welcome ! It's true that the pastels are an exciting way to work for someone who is used to the shading , it's kinda powder like the charcoal !

thanks a lot ! Yes the eyes are always the focus on a portrait and on Heath's portraits they're just...so intense !
A pleasure to draw them !..
