There is a beautiful softness to this portrait. You can see the youth in her eyes, yet at the same time you can see her growing into a young woman. I love that your pencil strokes are so expressive. Lovely!

I like to do a not-too-much realistic work : I mean , I like for the watcher to see that it's with a pencil that the work was done , same I like to show strokes from brushes in the paintings , because I keep in mind that I don't work with a camera after all !

It's very kind of you , but I surely would kto know why the word 'intriguing' ( don't worry , I surely don't mind to be 'special' , lol )

Mahican-Atim In reply to BlueZest [2009-04-15 19:59:11 +0000 UTC]

Awww, intriguing...yes an explanation is in order. Well, it is really because I have grown accustom to the use of the "smudge" technique in human portraits, especially here on dA. And for your portrait with the clouds in the background having a stormy look and the of course the tree giving that slight lean feel, with the hatching technique you've created a whisping breeze, and to me....I find it quite compelling. I don't believe the smudge technique would have given me that same feeling, intriguing Great piece!

BlueZest In reply to Mahican-Atim [2009-04-16 21:31:19 +0000 UTC]

I sincerely thanks you for the attentive look on my work and all the precisions you give me .
It's really kind of you .
I know well enough what you mean about the 'smudge" aspect of all one category of portraits .

I like to treat the materials myself and that's why I don't use too much cotton or Q-Tips ( only on Bristol Paper on some occasions )
I like that all the areas don't look the same because I think the aspects of the different materials give a real relief to the work .

But of course I'm totally open-minded about what every artist feels free to use whatever they can find necessary for themselves .

Thanks again !
Mireille.

It's hard to say what I like more in this.. I'd have to list too many elements : eyes and hair surely stand out, great details! But what I love in this drawing is sweetness veiled with a bit of melancholy of the child's face: great emotion in this.

Aw thank you so much , because this is what I was attracted for in this pic of the little girl at first sight : exactly what you describe
I guess we have often the same feelings about what kind of faces we like , and it has always a great level of emotion in them anyway

Well , you're really nice to me my friend but look what I'm going to write down : I'm not feeling too bad about this drawing , lol
You can see it's a nice change

I'm sure you'll know what I mean if I told you that I felt good from the beginning to the end , and that I was fast and sure about it . It happens to you too , doesn't it ? Aw these sweet moments of inspiration... if we could have that on full time !
We would all sign for it !

Thanks a lot Joe ( I ate my cake , so now we have to wait for MY birthday : January !!! it's a long way , lol )

Wow this is really beautiful. I love the way you did the hair, it's very dynamic and a perfect frame for her sweet face. The eyes are gorgeous, too, the high contrast creates that depth effect that really lets them come alive and gives her a look that seems much older than her years.
I normally strive for a photorealistic look, but the crosshatching you used here and the obvious pencil strokes in the shading work really well.
Great work!

BlueZest In reply to Raishuu [2009-04-14 20:32:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the detailed and constructive comment ( but I'm not so surprised because ...I just read your thoughts about the new Deviant Feature on your Journal )

I never let a comment myself if I'm not able to talk of my feelings about the work with more than four words , but I only comment on what I like and it makes things obviously more easy

I just needed one look at the pic of this little girl to know that I wanted to draw her rightaway . I noticed too ( it's what I totally agree with you ) that her way of watching makes her look older than she really is . The eyes are always the focal point to me in each Portrait anyway .

I'm not totally into the absolute photorealistic work as you noticed ... ... I have a great admiration for this stunning level of technicity ( like I just noticed into your own work actually ... but , speaking only for me , I need to remember that this is a pencil in my hand and if I handle it too strictly to obtain only a perfect technical result it doesn't work for me : I have to let it go to let my feelings guide me ... and I'm afraid that means imperfections with the stroking , lol !
Well you were nice enough to say that it wasn't an inconvenience so I thank you again !

Really , thanks . It was so interesting , and now I have to discover your own work more closely ( I hope that my bad english didn't prevent me to makes myself clear enough ! )

Mireille.

Aww you're welcome I feel similar about comments though I sometimes have to remind myself that I don't have to comment on all the deviations in my message center And sometimes I find things on here that leave me with nothing to say but "Wow..." really...

I actually don't think there's anything wrong with not striving for photorealism, if it doesn't work for you that's fine. I really like the way you draw and shade and it's very appealing to the eye. I think it's close-minded to believe there's only one "right" way of drawing portraits.

And don't worry, your english is fine. I'm not a native speaker myself but I just hope people ignore my little mistakes (Or tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can get better )

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlueZest In reply to Raishuu [2009-04-15 08:41:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm always so glad to find new people who think that there's certainly not a single way to draw or paint , but with open-minded criterias .
It's relieving !
I'm tired to hear lectures about what things must to be .
I think that creating is a so personal journey that every person has the right to use their own tools about it . And 'sensibility , feelings and sensitivity' are my favourite words for it
The technique has to serve the feelings and not the opposite for me , but I also think that anyone has the right to do exactly what he wants to !
If creation isn't about liberty and open-minded , I don't know what other stuff could be !

Have a good day !
Mireille.

True words spoken lightly
This is art, it's not mathematics or something were there's only one right solution. I think as long as someone is happy with the way he does things and enjoys what he/she is doing, who am I to tell them it's wrong or they should do it differently? Especially if the result is so pretty

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

BlueZest In reply to Raishuu [2009-04-16 21:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again , yes the reality is that if we aren't able to find freedom in art and creation , so where would we be able to find it ?
