Description "Once upon a time near the magical woods of Rúndawald lived a little girl and her mother. The little girl was a gentle soul, and when she was old enough to be sent to school in the nearby village, she was eager to meet the children that lived there and become their friend.

However, when she approached the children, they rejected her, because her mother was known to be a witch and the townsfolk were afraid of magic. No one would play with nor even talk to the little girl, so she spent her childhood years in solitude, only finding comfort in her plush toys at home. She would indeed play and talk with the stuffed animals for hours, pretending they were her friends. But after the little girl matured a bit, she painfully realized that she was deluding herself: her plush toys were only toys, empty items without a soul, no matter how hard she wanted them to be alive.

Years passed and the little girl grew into a fine young witch herself, having followed the teachings of her mother before the latter passed away. Now living by herself in her childhood's cottage, she had learned to brew herbs into glimmering elixirs, to chant prayers on candle-lit nights, and to hear ancient wisdom through the whispers of the wind. But though gifted the young witch was, her life still was a lonely one.

One day, as she was gathering hawthorn flowers, the young witch came across a group of children from the nearby village. They stared at her in curiosity, so she seized this opportunity to befriend them. Smiling, she naively offered them to smell the flowers' fragrance. But the children backed away; they squeaked she was a witch and the daughter of a witch, one that couldn't be trusted. This new rejection echoed the times when people shunned her as a child, and the young witch understood that the townsfolk had been talking behind her back ever since. First shocked and upset, she felt hatred fill her like the deadliest of poisons, and her sanity slipped away.

She bewitched the children, so they would stop cackling and follow her obediently to her cottage. There, she put them to sleep, drew their blood, and used it to brew a potion in her mother's cauldron. Ultimately, using the potion to summon a forbidden magic, she sealed the children's souls into her old plush toys, breathing life into them. This way, the young witch now had the companions she had always been longing for. She would no longer be alone.

Meanwhile, in the nearby village, the children who went missing were never found again."

This picture has two of my favorite things: Halloween and teddy bears. (And one of those bears looks like he is PLOTTING. XD ) The story took a dark turn that the girl trapped the souls of children in the bears.

This picture immediately sent my imagination afire. It made me think what if teddy bears could be a witch's familiar?  Not quite as nefarious. But I am currently working on a novel about teddy bears so I guess I have fluff on my mind.

Instant fave for this pic. I love it!

Thank you so much! Yay, the teddybears are based off the ones I own (I painted them from life), and the rightmost one really has those wicked eyes and smile (while the other one is the most depressed-looking thing life ever made). They don't talk when I'm around, but I'm sure they enjoyed the limelight

"Through the joy of power and wealth, a man owns his day" ?).

Weeeeeell...
Indeed, taking the short tale I included in the description into consideration, it's supposed to be blood. But if you put the story aside, it could be any reddish/brown liquid - like elderberry juice, rooibos tea, or even balsamic vinegar

Absolutely stunning work! O_O I'm actually at a temporary loss for words! So much so that I faved it! XD Cool accompanying story too! Also, just wanted to say I like your avatar change-up! Very festive for Halloween!

Well, it's 4 AM here, I still haven't slept, so I'm at a loss of words too - but NOT for the same reasons

Anyway, triple thanks to you: for the kind comment; for the fav (especially means a lot from you as you don't fav much, pretty much like me); and for taking the time to read the short tale (peeps are busy and usually don't read descriptions at all, or only a quick glance. I really appreciate people like you, who really focus their attention on the deviation
So, triple thanks = triple hug??

And yeah, since 2017 I change my avatar on Halloween and Christmas, and when entering a new season Happy Halloween to you! I hope it was a good day for you.

CrystallineDreamer In reply to Blunell [2019-11-02 02:12:32 +0000 UTC]

Well if we're both at a lost for words, it's going to be pretty quiet here. lol

You're welcome! LOL You're right, I don't fave very often. lol I should change that, maybe watch more people, but I like quality over quantity. lol

Sure! Sometimes I do the quick glance thing if I'm pressed for time, but I like reading the descriptions to learn more about the piece.

Thanks for the compliment! LOL I feel the same about your perspective, especially when you comment on something I made. I value and appreciate your feedback greatly.

LOL Awww! Those are some fun emoticons! Triple You're welcome! <--- I can only remember that hug-emoticon's  tag. lol

Right! I might be wrong, but your Halloween avatar this year looks a bit different than I remember, I think it's the flash of a close-up of the creepy version of the face. Or am I mistaken? I remember the avatar, just not that part of it. lol I've been meaning to ask, did you animate your avatars yourself? Because that blowing hair looks good!

It was pretty good. I was out running some errands and saw some kids trick-or-treating. It was cold, around 32f out. So at the freezing temp, and with some snow on the ground. It was kind of nostalgic as I had trick-or-treated as a kid when there was snow on the ground. So it was pretty cool... literally AND figuratively! lol I hope you had a fun Halloween! Did you get to dress up for it? (I didn't this year. lol)

Blunell In reply to CrystallineDreamer [2019-11-02 14:33:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't mind the quiet, as an introvert I actually find silence to be soothing (and imo there's no pressure to fave more deviations: everyone experiences DA as they please, and it's fine either way )

Regarding the avatar thing, indeed the flashing close-up is new. You've got a good memory for these things (And well, adults never dress up for Halloween here, and very few folks actually celebrate it. Most French people deem this event to be a tasteless one, because we're grumpy and judgmental like that Which is a pity, since Halloween comes from Samhain - which wasn't a celebration of horror, but the last day of the harvest season for Gaels...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CrystallineDreamer In reply to Blunell [2019-11-04 04:13:04 +0000 UTC]

LOL Yeah, I don't mind quiet too much. Although since Dad died, I generally like to have some "background noise" going. Whether it be music, the TV, or something on the computer (digital or dvd). I like listening to stuff when I'm working on the computer anyway, helps me concentrate a bit more. TBH I started off in life as a friendly extrovert, but, well, Life is harsh and I introverted quite young. I barely remember the extrovert stuff. Mostly I've come to prefer being left alone IRL, especially if I'm out sketching and when I'm home.

LOL Nah, I know there's no pressure to fave.   And I agree, as long as nobody is hurting/harassing anyone on DA, it's fun. If I see anyone doing such things though, Ooooo you better believe I'll kick some butt! Text-wise of course. lol Since I can't jump through the computer screen to smack some sense into them. LOL

Ah! I thought that looked different! Glad to know I was right! XD It's a nice touch and it makes the avatar a bit creepier. ;D

Ah! That's too bad, I don't know much about Samhain, I think in a cartoon in the 80s, "The Real Ghostbusters", based on the movie with Bill Murray and Dan Ackroid(sp?), Samhain in the cartoon, was depicted as having a Jack-o-lantern for a head. Wooden arms and hands and a purplish garment.

LOL Well, some people. I mean,  they get to be adults, and forget what it was like to be a kid, remembering the FUN stuff. At least that's MY view on adults around here. Although, I do see adults in costume if Halloween falls on a day when I head out to sketch. Some places have costume contests and stuff. lol I'd never compete, I don't have any good costume ideas anyway. XD

The Gaels, are you referring to the Irish? I came across something a number of years ago, I can't remember where, but it said that Jack-o-Lanterns were originally made in Ireland, but carved into turnips and used as lanterns if they had to be out at night. But, I don't remember the source, so I'm not sure how accurate that is. :-\

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blunell In reply to CrystallineDreamer [2019-11-06 13:39:24 +0000 UTC]

You'd hurt yourself if you were to jump through your computer screen, bro

And yeaaah, finally someone who knows about the turnip thing! x)
Indeed, Irish people would carve turnips to give them creepy faces, place a candle in them, and hang them outside on October 31, in the belief it would ward off unwanted spirits.
Which brings us back to Samhain: during this celebration, at night, the veil dividing the world of the living from the realm of the dead was thought to be at its thinnest (because of how the God's death would temporarily "open a gate" - but that's some additional lore). So carved turnips were meant to deter possibly malevolent spirits from settling in the living world.

At least that's what I learned from various sources, including pagan traditions. But my English teacher (who was a die-hard biker, rocker and beer-drinker) gave us a funnier version: at night, Irish women would use turnips as lanterns to go and search for their drunken husbands when they were too smashed to find their way home

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CrystallineDreamer In reply to Blunell [2019-11-07 00:14:37 +0000 UTC]

LOL Cool! Someone who knows more about the turnip thing than me! (Because I don't know much about it. lol)

Ah! Whatever I read about the turnips, said that they were used as lanterns for finding their way home at night too. That seems to fit in similarly to what your English teacher said about the wives looking for their besotted husbands! lol  I can also see them using them as a warding against evil spirits. lol

Oh, I see! Neat! I didn't know that about Samhain! XD I really should look more into Irish Folklore, but for some reason, I haven't.... yet. LOL I should know a bit more of my heritage. lol I'm 50% Irish, from my dad's side. I'm also German and Norwegian from my Mom's side. With a blood-combo like that, you would think I'd love to drink and be rowdy, but nope! LOL Not my style. Never been drunk. lol

Anyway, that was very neat information! Thanks for sharing! ^_^
