I don't know how you do it. I wish I did, but I don't. Your photos just have this vibrant colour, this... something that I have never seen before (and I have seen a lot, I'm not just bullshitting you here ). Everything just seems to be perfectly lit - no burned highlights, no black shadows...

My only real question here is: how much of it is technique and how much is postprocessing? I know my way around Photoshop, so I know what it can do, but this is just bloody ridiculous

If you have a more specific question let me know and I'll do my best to answer it.

Hah... well... I'll have to think about this one...

What do you do with the colours? What kind of postprocessing goes into that? Cause they always seem so vibrant. Oh, and what gear do you shoot with?

And thank you for the compliment : ) I think it would have been amazing to see some of my subjects shot with your style!

I guess more is the 5d at this point. The first 3 pages are the rebel.

I looked at your psd files and it looks like you do the same things I do. Layermasks and curves tool primarily... ive been using layerblending modes recently, explained a little further in my journal. I have a 5d now but most of this portfolio is from a digital rebel. I have 2 430 ex flash units from canon. Sometimes I check out real equipment (mono heads) from the school here.

I love your American Portrait series. I would like to think that my photos are a combination of good technique in both lighting and post processing. This particular photo didn't have much post processing other than putting it together (it's 3 photos.) But it hasn't been manipulated much at all other than that. Those flares are real. Theres lots of lights as well (8), more than I left in the poster. (it would have been rediculous with 24 flares)

Very funny!

Just one question about lighting (I am no expert): I see that in the majority of your portraits, the flash strobes can be seen distinctly (you fire them towards the lens). Isn't there a way to obtain the same light without the strobes appearing in the picture?

You would just have to flag them off to where they were hitting the people and not the camera. You could put them behind people, or futher away out of the picture. I'm not an expert either.
