Street scene at lunchtime. Xian is the capital of the Shaanxi province, located about 560 miles (900 Km) south west of Beijing. It is a very ancient city and is at the eastern end of the Silk Road, so visitors have been coming here for thousands of years.
The single child may reflect the "One Child" Policy that was introduced eight years earlier. This restricted the family size for couples living in urban areas, though not always to one child. This was a time of change, notice that all the adults are wearing very plain clothing, but the child is dressed in distinctive clothes.
This was still a world of bicycles rather than cars and market stalls rather than big stores. A bike is just dissapearing out of shot in the bottom left corner!
