Description An icon of St Helen (Helena, Elena) painted as a Christmas gift for my sister, whose name saint she is. St Helen was the Christian mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, who halted the persecution of Christianity in the empire placing it instead as its official religion, and eventually being himself baptised on his deathbed. St Helen is famous in her own right for, in her old age, going on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to rediscover the sites of significance in the life of Jesus, naturally sacred to Christianity. The important ancient churches in the Holy Land, such as the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem [link] trace their founding back to Helen's pilgrimage. This is why she is depicted carrying a church. St Helen is also famous for uncovering the relic of the True Cross, hence why she is depicted holding a cross.

Model paints and acrylic, with gold leaf, on MDF. The design is based on one I found online.
(I actually completed this on time for a change!)
