Description
8. Your Tokota has met with a potentially fatal accident. Weak and close to death, they must find recovery through either a friend, stranger, or their own mettle.
Cans snarled, ears swiveling back to press tightly to his skull as he grit his teeth against the wind and rain. The Taniya Mountains were treacherous on the best of days, but the mounting gale that swirled around him made the terrain downright deadly. Cans had his mind set, however, and he would not be deterred. He hadn’t been beaten by the bear so he certainly was not going to be bested by the weather. Not to say that both adversaries wouldn’t get a few good hits in. The barbary maned male barely concealed a wince as the wind drove the icy rain into his still fresh wounds, the strikes feeling like bullets to his sensitive flesh.
It had been no more than a half hour ago that he encountered the bear. The heavy rain had just started to bloom into a full storm and Cans had assumed a grueling pace, determined to make it up the side of the mountain to the shelter he knew lay carefully hidden. So focused on the task at hand, unable to see and smell due to the rain, and unable to hear because of the wind, Cans had been completely unaware of the bear. And the bear had used that to her advantage, erupting from a rocky crag with the element of surprise and getting in the first devastating blow. Completely taken off guard, Cans recovered as best as he could, barely dodging another swipe of the bear’s hooked claws before switching to the offensive. His thick mane, had done well to protect his neck and belly from the bear’s onslaught, only a few superficial wounds marring his fur, but his necklace of cans hadn’t fared as well and the snapped rope now swung listlessly from his neck. Ultimately it was really the weather that downed the bear. Cans had driven her away from her hiding spot and back towards the steep mountain side. The rain and win had done the rest; the rain making the already unstable rocks dangerously slippery and a particularly strong bout of wind throwing the bear completely off balance. The bear had tumbled down to her demise and while Cans regretted it hadn’t been a fair fight and that all of the useful meat, bones, and hide her carcass had to offer would now be wasted, he had other more pressing matters to attend to. Like the deep, aching wound that tracked across his spine.
Cans could barely feel it now, the rapidly dropping temperature doing well to numb a substantial amount of the pain, but he could feel the blood sluggishly leak from the wound and knew that he needed to tend to it immediately. He had collapsed after the brawl, body exhausted from traveling and fighting. His sides heaved from the fight, only interrupted by the occasional shiver as the rain had continued to chill and soak him. He didn’t know how long he laid there for. But he refused to be beaten by the mountains. He had set out to prove his mettle, to conquer the dangerous trek on his own, and no amount of bad weather nor wildlife attacks would stop him. So he got to his feet, shook himself off, and continued to climb.
He would not be deterred.
