Description The Legend of Korra season finalΓ© was fantastic all around (apart from the last 3 minutes of it, but let's forget that!), but the one thing that really got my blood pumping was when the good General unrolled a map of Republic City and started pointing at it! I couldn't resist the call to make a map of my own.

Some screencaps and a good amount of research later, I present to you a map of Republic City!

Based heavily on maps seen in the show itself and the 'Welcome to Republic City' interactive... thing, I've tried to clarify where some of the major places featured in the show occurred. The location of Dragon Flats, Kuang's Cuisine and Narook's Noodlery are pure guesswork though (and the Silk Road bridge is based on an educated guess).

There are a few major differences between those maps displayed in the canon and the one I've completed, most notably the buildup of the city. In an official piece of art showing the city ([link] ) there is an immense amount of greenery around the north of Yue Bay and also to the south of the city. In the maps we've seen however the entirety of the map has been covered in cityscape. I tried to address that as much as possible.

This map was posted in July, 2012. The series finale didn't air until December, 2014.

Boomerang would be referring to the first season finale.

Could use this map as reference for a fanon project that I am working on.
Particularly when I start doing my "Azula Asylum/Island" and "Azula City" concepts.

Now I wonder what that could be about

An old concept that I've shelves for the moment.

To put it simply, it's an AU where Azula is alive by Korra's time,
was cured of her insanity, and founded a mental institution within Republic City.

It is EXACTLY what you think it is.

It's based on the maps you see in the show! Made entirely by myself from off-screen sources!

It looks like NYC almost, but if you head towards N NE probably you'll run towards BaSingSe.

boomerangmouth In reply to supersonic3225 [2012-07-04 19:49:26 +0000 UTC]

Not without getting a little wet first!

It does look a little like NYC! I referenced maps of 1920s New York for this because it was one of the inspirations for the show runners.

Like ~Battlefield-Blog said - the show's producers were inspired heavily by 1920s New York! In fact, I used archive maps of NYC from the twenties as inspiration!

BenjaminHopkins In reply to boomerangmouth [2012-07-02 22:28:12 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't just New York they used, also Vancouver, Hong Kong, and Interwar Shanghai. Interestingly enough, when they invaded China in the 30's, the Japanese did a few bombing raids on Shanghai, just as the Equalists bombarded Republic City.

boomerangmouth In reply to BenjaminHopkins [2012-07-03 18:28:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh you're certainly right there, I was just talking in terms of the landmasses! The makeup of the entire bay area, right down to the weathered bronze statue of Avatar Aang, draws a lot from New York wouldn't you say?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BenjaminHopkins In reply to boomerangmouth [2012-07-05 23:20:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It's supposed to be east-meets-west, but in some ways, is largely American-influenced.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

boomerangmouth In reply to BenjaminHopkins [2012-07-07 08:06:39 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, but only as far as the way modern technology is mostly American-invented!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BenjaminHopkins In reply to boomerangmouth [2012-07-07 19:14:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, yes. From what I've gathered (and this is largely off-topic), the technology in LoK is mostly steampunk/dieselpunk. The cars are gas-powered, while the streetcars and el train run on electricity.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

boomerangmouth In reply to BenjaminHopkins [2012-07-07 20:15:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, and all of it firmly rooted in the Avatar world! An internal fire-bending engine if you will! xD
