I have taken up playing trqaditional charango and ukelele, and have both of these very fine instruments, indeed. I have also aquired a beautiful auditorium size spanish guitar. A check of my youtube account will show the stuff I am currently studying, mostly Boliviano and Peruviano folk tunes. I also have some great songs from Ecuador and Argentina, but that stuff is mostly South American Pop.

What goes on out west, my friend?

S.A. Pop? well the pop music out there......i guess it's nice but i'm more old school when it comes to those Latin rhythms. now i'm HELLA JELLA of you talking about your instrument collection.

as for me it's funny you mentioning music because i've been teaching myself how to use the Ableton music software and hopefully the mixing console when i master how to make music. speaking of master i've having a difficult time converting my master file into a .wav file. for some reason the song won't save, all i get is the kick drum at the beginning and that's it. i went to the company website and posted a question for help and got no response yet, and that was a few days ago. i might have to contact a rep of the company instead of users of the software who are like me.

South American Pop is nothing like the slop the corporate monster feeds us up here. It actually has content worth listening to. Latin music never goes out of style, it simply evolves into something more awesome every day.

I have a huge collection of stringed friends now. Lessee....

Two Precision electric bass guitars
Yamaha 6 string dreadnaught guitar
Yamaha 12 string dreadnaught guitar
Yamaha parlor guitar
Martin Backpacker guitar
Golden String Company spanish auditorium guitar
Fender Stratocaster Deluxe electric guitar
Kent electric mandolin
Johnston appalacian dulcimer
Quispe Torrez professional charango
Fender Koa concert ukulele

Lots of stringed friends, aye.

You need two computers to do recording with. The first machine is a sound source during overdubbing. It then becomes a playback device during mastering. The second machine simply records what the first one puts out. During actual tracking, one machine can do it all. But to master, that first machine needs to play back into a second rig.

You can use a good laptop for mastering as long as it has a line in and a good audio codec. I have two computers in my studio. The first runs Sonar with Waves Platinum Bundle on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. The second one runs Sound Forge with Waves under Windows XP Pro SP3. I use Logitech Z2600 2.1 speakers which are excellent monitors for small places with 200 watts RMS of pure clean power.

Ableton is nice software. It can do MIDI and audio very well. It is somewhat propriatary and targeted at MAC users, but it can be set up to output standard red book quality wave files in Windows. Let me know how that goes...

man come on now. that's alot of strings there. you're definitely a string aficionado.

as far as the issue with the song i contacted the guy i bought the console from and he informed me that i probably didn't select all the songs before i saved it as a master. now i got a new issue--my drums disappeared.

you CAN'T be serious. doesn't matter though, i got a handle of how the software works and know how to make a song so i'll make a new one, wasn't like i wasn't planning on making more tracks anyways. so you're familiar with ableton huh? and don't EVEN tell me about MIDI, i've been downloading VST(i) plugins like crazy!!!!

My familiarity with Ableton is limited, only in passing via trade journal reviews. I have not read anything negative about the product, but I have never personally used it.

I use Sonar and Sound Forge because they have been around a long time and are very stable and mature packages that are easy to use and able to run common plugins. Sound Forge can actually run as a child window within Sonar. This is good for editing tracks on the spot before final mixdown.

I use MIDI on a separate computer that is controlled by an standard 88 note piano keyboard MIDI controller. This PC runs Sonar as a MIDI device that can load any size soundfont on up to 512 MIDI tracks. This has 1024 voices that can play back up to 64 note polyphony. I use it to build percussion and orchestra texture tracks.

The nice thing about Sonar is that you can have both MIDI and audio tracks in the same project and the action between these is seemless with perfect quantization. Sonar and Sound Forge are ideal products since they require only a modest XP machine to run smoothly. The secret is the SoundBlaster Live! audio engine with huge soundfonts loaded. The samples are very realistic and controlling them with total precision is a breeze.

I currently have about 90 plugs installed. These are all mostly WAVE products, but I also have some TC Native goods. I have all manner of EQ, limiter, gate, reverb, delay, you name it. I can use these in real time, with each track having their own virtual rack full of toys. One is only limited by the machine resources.

hmmm...........

so before i download ANYMORE VST(i) plugins, which do you think are good in your opinion from what you've used? i go to this blog page, which also has a fb page, for my plugins and sample packs:

very resourceful.

Below are the plugs I cannot live without:

WAVES

C4 Compressor
Q10 Paragraphic EQ
X Noise
X Click
L3 Ultramaximizer
S1 Spatial Imager

Sony

Parametric EQ
Audio Track
Graphic Dynamics

TC Native

RVerb

I also use Fluid Synth on organ sets with MidiTzer, and the native font loader in Sonar.

Other plugs I use as needed but these are rarely employed unless a client has special needs.

Muchas gracias, amigo mio.
