Malik was a bit worried about the rite of the hunt. Fangorn was okay at fishing, excellent at trekking, but hunting? The Tokota didn't have a predatory bone in his body. The pair only hunted when there was no food to be had by any other means and still it was more frequently Malik who made the kill than his trusty mount. He'd trained his mount not to kill or harass wildlife unless the explicit order was given, but even before that he couldn't remember a point where Fangorn had voluntarily taken an animal's life. (Fishing didn't seem to bother him; Malik wasn't sure Fangorn understood that they were living creatures and not slippery hunks of meat that drifted in the currents.)

They steered clear of the bears; no point in courting danger when the Tokota's heart wasn't in it. A moose was nearly as dangerous, and Fangorn had personally raised and adopted caribou calves so that was right out. Deer were close enough to caribou to be a problem. No, if they had to take something down it would be something where Fangorn could show off the hunting skills that he did have. Tracking by scent, moving quietly and pouncing quickly. They'd be chasing a fox today, and hopefully catching and killing it cleanly.
