This is why you're better off with a vintage... I've seen bikes from 1930/40/50s still going strong, despite the surface rust (and that's all what the rust does to them - contrary to Kronans or other cheap bikes).
Funny enough, there's still a lot of stuff to salvage from it. Once in A'dam I was adjusting a friend's bike to my height and broke the seatpost bolt. Fortunately a "fietswrak" (derelict bike) nearby had a good one
