allow me to introduce you to the triad of our alternate-universe Jonathan Crane and his twisted mental roommate.

Little!Jonny: when he was younger, Jonny didn't have any relatively horrible problems, aside from wretched nightmares and of course the mockery from his peers. all that changed one day with a simple prank and a nursery rhyme...
Imaginary Friend!Scarecrow: i believe Jonny's always had an issue with his multiple personality disorder; his is truly a unique case no matter which doctor you ask. at such a young age, Scarecrow might have been nothing more than a playful whisper in his head, something he naturally attributed to being an imaginary friend. but the most disturbing quality the juvenile Scarecrow possessed was the ability to move Jonny... to make him do things.

Therapy!Jonny: we like to call him 'therapy!Jonny' at this stage in his life because as as time wore on, things got worse and worse for him, and this was a major part of his life where he was undergoing intense therapy for his illness. with his grandmother dead, the orphanage having no hold over him since he turned eighteen, and with nowhere else to go, Jonny enrolls in college, where he lives in a shared dorm with his roommate and at-the-time boyfriend, Eddie. this is a backwards blade for poor Jonny, as Eddie was abusive mentally and physically. therapy!Jonny is studying hard, but always interrupted by things relating to the personality in his head that, by now, he's aware of - but refuses to name.
???!Scarecrow: one of the ways to treat multiple personality disorder is to slowly but surely persuade the dominant personality that it and the extras present are in fact the same person in attempt to merge the mind back into one. all of Jonny's treatment has been backfiring in the most disturbing of ways. even the numerous doctors he's been seeing have to admit there's something very unsettling about the fact the personality named 'Scarecrow' in Jonny's mind doesn't react like a normal extra personality would. at this point in his life, Jonny was terrified senseless of Scarecrow and beyond therapy, refused to talk about or say his name out loud. while before he'd given Scarecrow an appearance in his imagination, he now denies it - and thus is completely unsure of 'who' is 'who' in his own mind.

AU!Jonny: and we come to the final and current stage in Jonny's freakish life. a grown man of forty-four with a doctorate's in psychology, Jonny teaches many classes on the areas of his expertise, the biggest being, of course, his studies and fascination with phobias. he's become hardened after all these years, not anything beyond acceptable, but still a cold, distant, and rather heartless man. his classes are tough, and his attitude is nothing less than frightening for his poor students. however, despite everything, he's still got hidden the shyness and hopefulness of his younger days, but it will take something... or someone... special to bring out that side of him.
AU!Scarecrow: Scarecrow has, by now, become a completely separate entity from Jonny's mind, although that's still where he dwells. this is both a good and bad thing, for even though the distinction between the two means Jonny has better control over himself, it also means that by distancing himself so much from this personality, Jonny has almost cut himself off from proper therapy response. his chances of healing or getting rid of the Scarecrow personality are slim anymore, even though he still sees a doctor biweekly. this Scarecrow is everything Jonny isn't: cruel, guiltless, malicious, greedy, violent, angry, deranged, and hateful. and he has a grotesque obsession, quite different from Jonny's interest in the subject, of fear and of frightening people, literally, to death.
