" The glaistig /ˈɡlæʃtɪɡ/ is a ghost from Scottish mythology, a type of fuath. It is also known as maighdean uaine (Green Maiden), and may appear as a woman of beautiful or monstrous mien, as a half-woman half-goat similar to a faun, or in the shape of a goat. The lower goat half of her hybrid form is usually disguised by a long, flowing green robe or dress. "
~ Unknown Scholar
Here, the fey-ghost creature is surrounded by her home forest - a deep and verdant wood where few people still travel. Mists curl around her hooved toes, tinted in alien lucid tones of magic and dreams. She wears the green dress that people have woven stories about, as well as a headcloth that doesn't succeed in hiding her locks of burning Scottish hue from your eye. Not only does she have the feet of a goat but the horns of one as well, and her eyes are dark but playful, perhaps even secretly well-meaning.
I've had great fun going all-out on a woodland background scene with mystical colours, ranging from green to blue to purple. All of the colours were chosen with a fairy tale in mind, or at least a scene that could almost feel like a vision or hallucination. The glaistig was described as a guardian-trickster by the commissioner, and I tried to capture that in a pose that's mischievous, inviting and confident, and strange too, but not menacing. Her eyes though... maybe... yes.
Many thanks to for the opportunity, not only to draw but to learn about this piece of folklore!
