This setup is not really ideal...

This set up is terrible, as cute as the picture is I have to say it, Bettas cannot be kept in "goldfish" bowls. They need a minimum of 3 gallons, silk or live plants, a filter, and a heater. They are tropical fish so their ideal temperature is about 80F. They can survive in smaller spaces, but that doesn't mean they are happy! They also like to jump, and in a space that small they can end up jumping out and dying.

Some don't jump. But, it's still safer to put a lid or cover (with holes of course) over the bowl. And the water might have been warm, you don't really know. And this betta is accompanied by a (what I'm guessing is silk) silk plant, which might Β entertain the betta. They survive in small spaces, but they thrive in larger spaces. The most important thing, really, is keeping it warm so they're happy and keeping them fed and entertained. Most of the time, space isn't much of an issue. As long as the bowl isn't smaller than a half gallon.

The problem is, even if the house is kept warm, there is no way to keep a house's temperature from fluctuating. That's why tank heaters are programmed to automatically adjust. If the air conditioning kicks on and raises it a few degrees one way or another, or even if the temp is turned down at night, the changes - no the cold - is what kills them. The only reason they survive in small places is because they have lungs as well as gills, but in the wild they have territories the size of football fields in rice paddies. Obviously this is way better than the way most people keep bettas, but even just throwing a cheap $5 heater in there would make a huge difference c:

My cats gave up trying to figure out what my betta was. . . and it helps that I have him up on my computer desk with a lid. . .
They honestly don't care. D:

Cute cat, cute fish ^_^; How big a tank is that? It's nice to see a betta not crammed in a tiny little jaw ^_^ And it's sooo decorated his color!
