Description Daleks versus Thals in a pic for Dr Who Magazine to illustrate the Big Finish audio adventure.

You might recognise the placement of the two main Daleks - they're a nod towards the composition of the title/logo of the old Dalek strip which ran in the British weekly comic "TV21" back in the 60's. Richard Jennings work on the strip is, for me, still the best Dalek art around.

Makes me want to watch Planet of the Daleks. You should be proud of your work!

Id love to see your interpretation of the new paradigm Daleks in the same bold style. Id love this as a poster on my bedroom wall!

Are those guys at the bottom Time Lord Soldiers?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BrianAW In reply to Generalobiwankenobi7 [2011-04-16 12:16:04 +0000 UTC]

Nope, they're Thals from Skaro, the ones who were the first to war with the Daleks, what with sharing a planet with them and all

Good to see the lousy Thals getting theirs!

Excellent work, does conjure up moods of the 1960s annuals!

But aren't the Thals supposed to be the GOOD guys?

curtsibling In reply to zippymax [2015-05-16 21:41:15 +0000 UTC]

In the Thal/Dalek war, there were no good guys...And the Thals allegedly started it...

zippymax In reply to curtsibling [2015-05-16 22:40:36 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there were good guys, just not ENOUGH good guys to stop the war be cause most everyone else wanted to keep fighting! Even most of the Mutos were so bitter about how they'd been treated by the "Norms" that they were willing to kill anyone who reminded them of "Norms"! But there were still some people on all sides who didn't like all the destruction caused by the war and wanted it to stop but simply didn't have the right amount of power or influence to do so! Things were getting better after the Doctor arrived but after Davros got through with both sides it was too late for things to improve! However, I heard that nobody really knows EXACTLY how the Thal/Kaled war began, some say it was the Thals who fired the first shot, others say it was the Kaleds...

The Terry Nation book "Dalek Survival Guide" gives some interesting facts about pre-Dalek Skaro.
And if you have seen the Baker serial "Genesis of the Daleks", you'll see things didn't get any better
for the people once the Doctor turned up. Also, the Thals used slave labour, so not really good guys!

zippymax In reply to curtsibling [2015-05-19 21:32:00 +0000 UTC]

Wait! Wasn't the message behind "Genesis of the Daleks" that "War brings out the worst in people"? Weren't both the Thals AND the Kaleds advanced races until they became obsessed with war and eventually got so used to it they BOTH stopped caring about how bad things had become because of the war! The Doctor didn't really have time to convince either side to CUT IT OUT ALREADY!!! It didn't help that he was trying to stop the Daleks from becoming the massive threat to all other lifeforms in the universe so that was yet another distraction for him to worry about! As for the Thals using slave labor? They were getting desperate! When the Kaleds say their motto is "Total extermination of the Thals" they might just mean it! In fact, the Kaleds might have used slave labor to make a giant rocket to use against the Thals too if Davros hadn't made THEIR dome invulnerable! They might even have been using slave labor anyway for some OTHER jobs! The TRUE evil of "Genesis of the Daleks" wasn't the Thals, the Kaleds, the Mutos, the Daleks or even DAVROS! it was the WAR ITSELF!

When Baker's Doc arrived the planet was dying and both sides were near collapse.
To be honest the Gallifreyans had no interest in the war, only stifling the development
of the Daleks at their inception. And yes, I agree the anti-war angle was something
that Nation himself was eager to underline. The Daleks were not actually meant to
represent the Nazis, but nuclear weapons, which had the potential to kill all!

PS
Good to speak to a fellow Doctor fan!

I doubt Skaro was dying, just becoming less and less inhabitable due to the various chemical weapons both sides were using on each other. Skaro was still intact for many years until it was destroyed either by "The Hand Of Omega" or at some point during the Time War.

The Time Lords were probably so scared out of their minds of the Daleks growing too powerful that if they had to outright CHANGE HISTORY by bringing peace and prosperity to all of Skaro they probably would have done it just to prevent such a thing from happening! I refuse to buy that even the arrogance of the Time Lords would have lead to THIS conversation:

The Doctor: "I did it! I saved us all from the Daleks!"

Time Lord: "But... How EXACTLY did you do that, Doctor?"

The Doctor: "Well... I had to convince everyone on Skaro to stop killing each other but a isn't a little change in History worth it if we can save everyone from the Daleks?"

Time Lord: "You... IDIOT! Go back there right now and demand everyone keep killing each other this instant!"

The Doctor: "WHAT?! But what if this was the only way to stop the Daleks?!"

Time Lord: "It's worth the risk so long as we have less work to do right now so HOP TO IT!"

The Doctor: But I--Oh, FINE. It's times like this I'm glad I left and I don't look forward to returning...

I think the Daleks are supposed to represent ANY deadly force! From bombs, to missiles to bio-engineered viruses The Daleks are about just about as lethal to all other forms of life!

PS
Yes, I am indeed a Dr. Who fan, I never realized how much I enjoyed the show until it became harder and harder for me to see anymore episodes! At it's worst, Dr. Who is downright CRINGE-WORTHY! But at it's best? It's pure T.V. MAGIC!

Love this picture, the way you have captured the style of the old Dr who annuals with the slightly blurred style of illustration is great.
I love Daleks (except the newest ones) and I love this illustration. brilliant.
