Thank you so much for taking the time and writing this critique! Your perspective on the architecture of the shot is interesting, and I realize that I meant to do this but never as clearly as you put it. A wonderful side of critiques to reveal works in the very eyes of their authors!

Well, I think it's important for other people to let us know their perceptions of our works. In my case it's pretty straight forward because I don't do anything that's all that challenging (technically or measureably) - slow exposure vs fast exposure... bleh! That's not pushing any envelopes!!!

But you don't just push those envelopes, you shove them out of the window and rewrite the rules of what makes a great photograph and that's one reason I find your work so interesting.

There may be other reasons but I'm damned if I can think of any!

Its been said that nature is the greatest artist of all, and that we get the opportunity to see her works every day.We capture a moment in time to manipulate it bit more to present that work in a new way.
I love the blend of colors and light , the feel the many textures in what is a vibrant and alive shot. Its funny though, as I don't see the scooter or lights detracting from this shot. They speak to me of the presence of "Now" in an old part of the city, and they seem to merge successfully as the scooter, lights and person are more in the distance, not up front , so therefore do not take away from the primary focus which is the Sunset in the distance.

Thank you for your critique and taking the time.

Interesting how the presence of the man and the motorbike will have triggered attention in this shot. It's actually a 5 minutes exposure shot of a crowded street, and they were the only 2 completely still elements ! I'm saying because at first I was really mad at him for being in the way and now I think also he's completely part of the shot and adds a human presence which would have been missing otherwise.

When I think of it, I could never have found a willing person to stand still for 5 minutes if I had looked for one ! Thank Mexican culture for this...

Vision: I think you did a great job building a name from this photo. Silence of the Sun bodes well with this empty street full of sun lit color. You certainly start the mind moving before the picture hits full view because of the color of photo and name of the deviation. Nice vision here.

Originality: Its hard to be original. However, with the location you have chosen, time of day, perspective, and lack of thoroughfare you have made this a pretty original piece. I can't say that I have seen something very near to this although I have seen many street level shots.

Technique: This is where you shine through on this deviation. The perspective really makes the shot what it is. Your use of lines and the height of the camera gives the feeling of really being there. The colors are stunning as you chose the right time of day to do the shot. I think it is a bit dark but that could be the intention and its a personal preference and not a blunder in technique. Only thing in the photo that hurts my eye is the white spec on the right side in the road (under the first overhang). I actually like the bike and person there as it brings the sense back of reality. Had they not been there it would be a surreal picture. I think sometimes its good to have the opposite, especially in a busy place like Mexico. Do you have a tag you are working on? I notice you don't have one here and you certainly should be identified as you have some great talent.

Impact: I think the impact here is initial but not long lasting. By that I mean when I see it is certainly strikes a chord. Its not mind blowing but it is very good and nice on the eyes. It makes me want to take a nice vacation. This is good! Its not the type of photo that stays in my mind once I look away and start into other things.

This is certainly a very great piece of work here. It is obvious by looking at the photo that the author is very skilled and has a great eye for photography. Cheers.

Thank you for this very detailed and fair critique! I really appreciate you took the time.

Thanks for pointing out the spec, it's now taken care of, as well a a few others that could only be seen in the downloaded file but bothered me nonetheless now that I started looking for them and finding them!

I did have a tag at some point but wasn't so happy with it. Anything that stands in the photograph actually bothers me in the end, including my own tag. I really have to consider it and give it some thought. Thanks there too for reminding me because I keep procrastinating with this.

And all in all I think it's fair to say it's a photograph for a moment, as were my holidays in Mexico. Nice to enjoy, soon to be gone... I can only hope there's a little light and warmth that will remain even if we never know it!

Cheers!

This is a simply fantastic piece! I get the feeling that, even though the street is nearly empty, it is alive and kicking with hundreds of people during the day. The lighting works well and the vignette at the bottom keeps the focus in the middle where it should be. The only issue I have is with the lights at the end of the street. They seem a little out of place to me, and the person near the scooter too, but with those minor things aside, this is a well constructed piece and a pleasure to critique. Keep up the great work!

You're completely right, and now that you've mentioned it I can't take it out of my mind. So the lights are gone !

BriceChallamel In reply to Grayda [2009-04-13 07:16:03 +0000 UTC]

Your feeling serves you well ! This street was actually crowded with people enjoying the cool temperature of sunset when I took this photograph, so I had to use a very dark filter and shoot a 5 minutes exposure ! Which tells you something about the "person near the scooter" : damn guy hasn't moved an inch in about 30 minutes during the whole time I fine-tuned the settings and experimented with this shot... So I thought he really deserved to be in it. Moreover he added to the impression that the street actually was empty !

As for the lights at the end of the street, they appeared during the shot, but I could remove them. Food for thoughts...

Thank you for your critique. Very appreciated !

mmm, that looks better! Fascinating story about the guy and the street, it really does look like he never moved a single inch and now that I know this, he doesn't seem so out of place!
