Yeah, they really are And I'm sorry to hear that, that must have been very hard to do I know I could never part with my babies, I get sad leaving them with my cousins just to go on vacation a few days.

yeah it was sad, but my babies had a different mother too and she kinda put up a big fuss about it. but im hoping to adopt another one when i get my apt. in the spring
they are such smart creatures and really clean, it bugs me that people think they are disgusting and ill mannered.

Awh, that would be really nice ^^ Yeah, rats are definitely alot cleaner than most pets. I used to have hamsters and now I have a guinea pig, and it's not even a contest as to which kind is the cleanest. My hamster used to always kick his poop out of the cage and my guinea pig does it too xD My rats don't do that at all.

hahahahah ewww. hamsters are cool, i like building tundels and crazy set ups for my friends. i think its cool how you can get them to be so still, if i tried to put anything on my lil guy he'd just shake it off or scratch at it.

It works.. decent xD She's not very thrilled with having it on her unless she's eating. It's difficult to get onto her too without a struggle D: I haven't used it in probably over half a year :\

i want one for my rat (once i get one lol.) so it wont get in any tight or bad places D:

Well she has gotten out of it before xD There really is no real solution to bringing them anywhere without the worry of them getting away. Oh and congratulations Send me pictures when you get one!! ^^ What gender are you planning to get and what kinda coloring or type of rat are you looking for? They're the sweetest little things, I never knew how sweet they were until about early 2010, when the lovely woman started posting photos of her rats and I read the commentary about them, and I fell in love immediately I didn't know they could be so affectionate! As for when you have one, I recommend putting him or her on your shoulder to chill My older girl Pancake will stay there if I put her on my shoulder, so I can walk around the house like that and she's perfectly fine. I can even vaccuum with her there and she's content So I get chores done + time with my baby, win/win Get him or her accustomed to doing it right away so it's like a natural habit ^^

oh wow Diane Photos sure does have a lot of great information!!:-D thanks, im totally watching her now. n.n

and i almost bought an awesome leash today even though i dont have a rat LOL. I WILL GET ONEEEEE >

and this may contain a couple repeats from the last reply but my mom really wants me to get females since they dont have the obvious "parts" lol and theyre smaller and smell less. though i kinda want males because i want a cuddler:/ ill be honest, im torn between the two.
I definately want one with cool markings- if i could, i would get a blaze or husky! unfortunately they arent available around where i live.. i cant find any for hours around
i have one little local pet store but its filled with creatures! they have rats and im becoming pretty good friends with the older lady that works there because i go so often to look at the rats LOL xD
shes always like "can you get one yet?? well ooorder some for youuuuuu;D" trololol.
i want a dumbo! but i guess its whatever comes in. all i ever see there are solids and hoods, which i fine with me. maybe a gray with white socks and a black hood?:3 im definately testing for temperament first though.

and oh wow, i think dA actually got me into rats... to be honest ive liked them for a LONG time. i really love any animal lol xD
but rats are different. i went to my local pet shop one day after researching rats for a long time and the older lady i mentioned was like "you wanna hold one" so im all "would i!" and that was it.
she gave me a 5 week black and white hooded.. it was so soft and wiggly, so i started petting its head from nose to ears and its eyes closed and it started to doze off. im pretty sure i left that day with tears in my eyes from the sweetness.

it was just a SO IT IS TRUE ABOUT THEM! moment... :'D

and yes! once i get one... it wont be able to get away from me lol! i definately want to do the shoulder thing, it think its great! ive also heard of them laying in your hood and pockets! hehe!

we will be the bestest of friends. o.o

Yeah, that's why I wanted males also x3 I read that they were more cuddly and affectionate. Females are DEFINITELY more active, but I think they have to be, cause of being a potential mother some day and all xD They have to be fit in order to handle 8-20 babies at a time!! And I know dumbos are cuter and everything, but it really doesn't matter what kind or color you get ^^ The most important and enjoyable part is their personality You never know, you may fall in love with a type you didn't expect When I got Pancake, I intended to buy a male with dark fur, I wanted a dominantly black or grey rat. But then I saw her and everything changed >w<

And I went through the same thing! I got into rats because of Diane, and I found her photos on dA on the front page one day, and reading that comment on the photo of Arkanys (I think that's how you spell his name, the photo was of the grey rat yawning with the grey background), and that was all it took to get me hooked x3

I don't know how you didn't take that little guy home, especially if you were in tears!! x3

Another note- it may or may not happen, depends on the rat, but have a few paper towels handy cause they poop like crazy on you in the beginning e_e It took Pancake 6 weeks to stop doing it within the first 5 minutes I took her out, and they would come out in 3-6's! xD She wouldn't just make 1.. lol She calmed down though and she got better with time I think she was just nervous. Cupcake only did that for a few days though, so it really depends on who you get!

Oh yes i know exactly what you mean. My cat that passed a few months ago (
now i have a cat i adopted. hes a GORGEOUS snowshoe with blue eyes and amazing markings, rabbit soft fur...
and i couldnt be more disappointed. its sad, i went through a lot to get him.. he was nice at the shelter and the first day home, but now hes so mean! i cant even touch him without getting bitten he wont sleep with me or sit with me... sigh*

and rats are simply the best... i didnt get that rat that day because my dad was totally against it! i feel like even when i get a rat, ill think back to that one baby... :c

yeah it took a 96 in the IMPOSSIBLE math class, winning first in a state competition, getting into a REALLY competitive art summer program, and a cheezy powerpoint that took 8 hours to get together to get permission. im getting a rat >!! LOL. they did agree, sooo n.n the thing is, they said "after mia.. well.. passes.." but not with the...'s. theyre so mean. mia is my golden that a raised from a puppy, shes only just turned 7 and she has aggressive cancer :"(((( she and my kitties have been my only big pets and I pretty much lost them both on the same day, my 16th birthday >.<'''' mehhhh.... anyways.... i dont want to wait for the dog to pass, i LOVE her!!!!!! its horrible to say that like its a replacement! but i love rats so much! maybe if i find one soon ill be able to get it "early"

and hahaha! yes ive read things like that. probably nervousness, yes. xD lol! where did you get your ratties?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrittyDee In reply to foxluver1 [2012-04-12 06:06:19 +0000 UTC]

Then you see exactly what I mean I'm sorry about your kitty I lost my kitten 3 yrs ago, he had to be put down because he had so many seizures that he could no longer function... he could only just breathe He was only two months old >.<

But wow, your kitty was perfect D: My cat isn't like that, I mean she's sweet, but she's very timid. She doesn't cuddle T_T She just hides.. And that's sad that you finally got what you wanted and it's personality turned out to be that way :\

And you know what? Who cares how your dad feels x3 If you're happy and it doesn't go near him, what does it matter? My mom was totally against it when I brought Pancake home (I didn't tell her, just did it xD), but after holding her a few times, she totally fell in love with her, and now she takes her out herself and kisses her and holds and cuddles her xD Rats are misjudged, and when someone actually holds one for themself, it's a world of a difference

And that's a horrible deal, having to wait until an animal dies x_x That's not a happy time That makes me kinda mad, honestly I can't stand it when people make 'deals' like that, it's like not positive at all x_x

I got my rats both from pet stores. Pancake I bought from a pet store that has like fish, rodents and birds to adopt, the occasional kitten and sugar glider (want one of these so badly!!). It's a clean store but the employees just seem to clean and feed, not really spend time with the animals :\ Cupcake I got in an also clean store, but I like this pet store much better. It's actually where I was trying to adopt my first rat from and waited on for over 3 months. I had asked for them to supply dumbos and gave them my number and they said they'd do it but they never did :\ They'd keep telling me that they'd do it and they'd call when they came in, but I never got a call from them. But anyways, I like this pet store better because they actually hand feed all of the pets and spend more time with them. Most of the employees are in their teens/20's, and they work there not because they HAVE to, but because they LOVE to. They know everything about all of the animals and you can really tell they care about them. I had a really nice (sexy & cute xD) young man help me when I adopted Cupcake. I probably was going there for 2 weeks for her and he kept telling me she was too young to take home so to come back next week, and the next week xD He took a blue marker and colored her foot for me so no one else could take her home She was one of two little girls out of a very big litter xD I got to see her momma and her sister and the eight+ brothers she had. I wish I had taken a photo T_T

i didn't know rat leashes existed! ^__^ There are leashes for every species now lol
I wonder if there are snake leashes!

BrittyDee In reply to blind-dancer [2012-03-29 19:03:32 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a rabbit leash or a ferret leash (I forget) and I fastened it to as small as it could go x3 I don't really put it on her though because she slips out of it very easily and it makes her nervous sometimes (enough to poop x3!!) And I'm sure there's a snake leash out there somewhere, but who knows if that would be able to stay on and not slip off

I love how distinctly individual they are even being so small. I'm not surprised of course but it's just so fascinating how vastly different they all are from one another in personality traits! So tiny and so much personality in one little body! Dumbo rats are just the sweetest looking rats. I also had a really cute hairless rat who eventually grew into her ears, but for awhile we thought she was a dumbo

My dumbo rat daphne was the runt of her litter and had babies a little too early (thanks to the petstore for letting her go to uneducated owners who dumped her back when they realised a LITTLE TOO LATE they had a male rat at home...) She was a fiesty little thing because of it all! She was very independent LOL! I wished she was more cuddly like your Pancake friend lol!

Sorry I took so long to reply, I had to leave And you're very right, they're all very different in their personality from each other. Pancake is alot more mild than Cupcake, but also more aggressive somehow, not with me or other people, but she'll attack other animals xD Pancake didn't accept Cupcake when I tried to introduce them, she bit her, so I can't have them together in the same cage I'm afraid she'll eat one of Cupcake's eyeballs or something e_e Then what do I do?! And how was your hairless rat? I've never actually seen one in person, I've seen images though. Personally, not my preference but.. xD And Daphne is such a cute name for a little girl rat

Hey there, I know you wrote this comment in January, but I'm curious if Pancake and Cupcake have become friends by now?

It's always dangerous to put two rats who don't know each other together "just ilke that", because the old rat will of course defend her territory. It's always best to have them meet on neutral ground (e.g. the bathtub, padded with clean sheets) where you can keep an eye on them and seperate them if they start fighting.

Only once they get along there (this may take a few days) can you put them both in one cage, but you need to clean it first very thoroughly and change all the sleeping houses etc, so it doesn't smell and the old rat will claims it as her territory and defends it...

Again, I know your message is a few months old (and I really hope your girls are getting along by now), but I just thought I'd put the advice out there, anyway, in case someone needs it!

Love all your Pancake photos, btw., she's adorable in all her hats

No, they're not friends I stopped trying to have them get along. I kinda lost interest in doing it too when one of my friends lost her two rats because when the one died, the other was heart broken and stopped eating and drinking and then it died within days D: I don't want that to happen with mine

I put them in a neutral area when I had tried, on the rug with a towel over it. They were fine the first two times then the third meeting they fought, so I stopped. I've gone over this stuff though through research and asking people in the pet stores, like the neutral thing, having multiple meetings before putting them in the cage and neutralizing the odors and rearranging items in the cage so there's no territorial things going on Thank you though for sharing your experience It just didn't work out. I'm kinda scared to lose one of them to heartbreak when one passes away too I really really would have liked for them to get along, I mean, what's cuter than two rats that snuggle each other? x3 But I've had the younger one for almost a year now (on April 1st) and it's just kinda past the point where I shoulda done it D: Thank you again though for the comments, glad you like the photos ^^

Oh, I see... that's really sad to hear!! Because like you say, what's cuter than snuggling rats, and as social creatures they really need company... well at least they have you as their human companion!

Integrations of new rats is always difficult, so I mostly take siblings in who already know each other - saves all of us a lot of stress XDD

BrittyDee In reply to akabeko [2012-03-30 15:20:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah they have me, hehe. When these ones are gone, if I get rats again, I will definitely get siblings, saves a ton of trouble x_x; I was new to this though, so that's why I didn't do that in the first place. And my dad had said no when I was 18 when I asked if I could buy two together. A year later he's just like 'suuuuuuure' xD So that was super helpful e_e;

Cute~ does she run away a lot? Is that why she's on a leash?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrittyDee In reply to ziggwies [2010-10-27 23:05:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, she can, but usually if I put her down, she runs back to me, either onto my lap or hides in my legs if I'm sitting on my knees xD The leash is just for fun and so she can run around where ever she wants without having to worry about losing her to the underside of a couch xD
